I am heading to France in 4 weeks time and need some advice.

is there anything special i should do/buy for riding the cobbles? is it best to take an alloy bike or would the carbon frame be ok?

You aren't giving much info, but here's the conventional wisdom. Use fatter tyres, if you're normally on 23c then get 25 or 27s. Use box section conventional rimmed wheels. A carbon frame should be okay, you'll have full insurance, won't you?????????
Nothing works as well as experience, learning to ride cobbles is an art, so to jump onto wet cobbles first time and expect to go fast is a recipe for ending up in a ditch. I've ridden quite a few cobbles in Edinburgh and a little in France etc; and I assure you, those northern France and Belgian cobbles are like no other.
