New Zealand - Rotorua - Bike Hire

Probably a long shot but does anyone know of an outfit that hires out bikes in Rotorua, New Zealand? I am aware of Planet Bikes but was hoping to get a road bike for a couple of weeks whilst there in December.

Anyone?

Hiring road bikes is much more difficult, not many do it.

Been there. That is how I found Planet Bikes and not much else. Hence the posting here to see if anyone had any personal experience.

I have had one bike shop offer me a MTB at $40.00 a day and I have to return it each day. I can hire a car for less and buy a bike for less.

An option I've considered may be to look up second hand listings, sorta like the tradingpost, and see if you can get an old cheapie to tide you over for the couple of weeks? Would be much cheaper, and even better if you could relist it for around the date you finish with it, and sell it off, or pawn it when you're done with it.

Only trick there is finding a bike that's suitable. But then again it's pesky enough trying to do that with hire shops anyway.

I have thought of that and did mention it to Mum. She is going to have a look in the paper for me. Maybe even a pawn shop or recycling place or something. If I can pick up something to just train on for $100 to $150 I will probably go for it. I suspect it will be my only option beside walking each day instead of cycling.

I have hired the mtb's at rotorua and they are showtime boxes to be polite.If you are going that way take your shoes and pedals as they will only have platforms.I just take my bike over..much easier.I come from a place 45mins north of Rottenrua and there are some of the best training roads in the world around there...i kid you not!.Wish i was going over this xmas as i will be missing one of my favourite road races.

Are you mad!...running ,you could go and do the run inside Tarawera volcano ...now thats what i call running.You climb to the top and then pretend you are in Jackass and run down the 45%+ slopes as fast as you can,just keep your weight back....awesum fun in the shingles.

I've done that on Mt Narahoeeeeeee. Each step is like a giant leap and it took no time at all to descend.

I have done it there too,was a very fast descent....not as good scree as Tarawera thou.Did you do the crossing....what an amazing walk.

Up and back. Two weeks after an eruption, so there were still some hot rocks, one of which was the size of a car and was still really hot underneath.

Thanks tallywhacker. Unfortunately they don't have an operation in Rotorua which is a pity as they are what I am looking for.
