karakoram highway

Postby RachelWhite » Sat Nov 23, 2013 11:59 am

Could anyone who has cycled the karakoram highway please advise the best time to go and whether it is relatively traffic free?
Perhaps also the biggest difficulties you may have experienced?

Thank you so much
Rachel

Dunno if there would be many here who have been that way.

I don't know anyone personally, but you could try here - it's pretty old now, and many of his links are dead, but it will give a personal account of the journey. Beware Janne Corax is a real hard man; he and another bloke (Martin Adserballe) were the first to cycle across the untracked wilderness of the Tibetan Chang Tang - about 15-20 days without sight of another human being!!

Other links for info on the KKH ?
Possibly Lonely Planets Thorn tree..
HU http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/southern-asia/ -Mainly motorcyclists.
It does close over winter - details are on the HU site. Traffic? It is a main link between China and Pakistan, so trucks.

AFAIK the KKH was closed to cyclists last season (I tried to ride it, was advised not to for this reason) - the local police put you on a bus instead. You can ride the Chinese side though. Worth noting that a bunch of tourists were killed on the KKH last year. You'd be unlucky, but worth knowing it can happen.
