Hmm.. the thing is, if they don't reduce a ban if a cyclist helps authorities with other investigations, the cyclist has no incentive to "dob in" others. It's probably better overall for cycling if more of the people involved are caught out in an investigation.

I don't know how riders can personally turn up to races after admitting/getting caught for doping though. You'd think they'd lost face enough to be too embarrassed to race professionally ever again.

A rider might be encouraged to roll the dice knowing if he gets caught and co-operates his sentence is reduced. Effectively Ricco (if a team is willing to risk him) will only have been banned for 1 Giro and 1 Tour. Not good enough, and not enough to discourage younger riders.

It has been suggested here that they implement 4 year bans for those caught. Take 4 years out of an already limited career (15 years ?) and you start to have a deterrent.

Four years, all previous winnings to be repaid and "Juiced-up Ar5ehole" tattooed on their forehead should do for a start. Get nasty for subsequent breaches.

What it also does is discourage Landis/Schumacher/Hamilton like defenses that only throw mud on the Labs. Still if anyone ever deserved a lifetime ban it was Ricco, though ill miss his insanely funny quotes.
