Don't forget big Tom Boonen!drubie wrote:..and always to somebody "big".Dahondude wrote:I am laughing so hard I am crying!
My brother and I had a competition last year to count how many times Paul S said " at the front end of the main field". We lost count within the first hour cos apparently eveyone and everything happens at the front end of the main field

-- It's big Van Summeren!
-- Here's big Jens Voight!
Big, big, big! Anybody over 60kg is apparently some kind of hulking monster, other than Cancellara (who must be close to the heaviest rider in the field despite dropping 10kg) who is never called big for some reason

must be something advantageous about having a nickname referring to antiquity.

nah, im not having a go at phil and paul, i really like em. just a bit of friendly ribbingParrott wrote:I reckon you blokes are a bit harsh. SBS are doing a pretty good job of their coverage and I don't see too many alternatives. Try watching test cricket if you are after superlatives

True, its just like having a go at Richie Benuads 'marvellous'. The man is a commentating god but everyone must have their own catchphrases.Tom Marius wrote:nah, im not having a go at phil and paul, i really like em. just a bit of friendly ribbingParrott wrote:I reckon you blokes are a bit harsh. Also Mike was looking a bit better last night, he may be like the GC contenders getting better the longer they are riding

he commentates for three. SBS, ITV4 in the Uk and Versus in America. I believe when you hear him in the background he is actually doing and intro/outro for one of the others (Versus shows a shatload of commercials, it is almost unbearable). Ive also been told he does a radio feed as well, so he could possibly be saying something to them. I believe it is also the reason he always mentions Australian riders (cadel), UK riders (wiggins, millar) and American riders (lance, lance and more lance) alot, so to accomodate for all audiencesTale wrote:I've read that Phil Liggett commentates for UK television at the same time as he commentates for SBS. It's likely he was talking into his UK microphone and left Sherwin on the Aussie feed.
There was a moment at the start of tonight's coverage when he said something on the Aussie coverage and then said the same thing again as if he hadn't said it before. Presume he thought he was on the other mic.
Gotta remember we are a tiny backwater country with a small TV audience, and therefore not much purchasing power. Usually we never get the best stuff - I reckon it's a bloody miracle we have him.

- Completely and utterly in the middle of the peleton.
- Completely and utterly riding at an average speed.
- Completely and utterly getting drinks for his team mates.
- Completely and utterly grabbing his musette
- Completely and utterly third across the line
etc.
(no, not a criticism, it's part of the charm of the coverage).
And yep, Tomalaris looks like he's getting more sleep
but really, that's rubbish. We get none of it because the choices are illusory.

Won't somebody think of the snails?
(I hope this week will be something more interesting than snail close-ups)

i was wondering, what would the etiquette have been if the snails had been squished? A hasty cutaway? Or are the french into that sort of thing?drubie wrote:Oh NOES! THE SNAILS!

The other day, while Cancellara (I think it was him) was lowering the front of his knicks, facing away from the camera but clearly about to take a leak, the camera didn't break away until a stream of urine arced through the air.Tom Marius wrote:i was wondering, what would the etiquette have been if the snails had been squished? There was worse footage than that broadcast during last year's Tour.... If I remember correctly the cameraman was filming a rider and mechanic sorting out a puncture, but had clearly failed to notice the riders taking a natural break in the background.Tale wrote: The other day, while Cancellara (I think it was him) was lowering the front of his knicks, facing away from the camera but clearly about to take a leak, the camera didn't break away until a stream of urine arced through the air.

There were also a few references to the 100 years war, and they loved calling the British "us".JV911 wrote:the boys were on fire last night...the bit with the snails had me in stitchesHotdog wrote:Fantastic

When they were talking about the Boules game they won at the church, they were talking about how it was another british invasion or something
