The Tour d' Afrique 2010 started from Cairo on Saturday. 12,000kms through Africa where I suspect the roads are in slightly worse conditions than France or Down Under, but then again, as you can see I think it's a different type of "race" I think this would be quite an interesting tour!! My friend Eric is doing it and he's riding for the same charity that I'm riding for.
Best fo luck to all the riders.

Hi
Is this an actual race or a "tour'? Web page?

Hey,
Website here
Tour d Afrique
It's from Ciaro to Cape Town over 4 months. Map is on the link above.
Quote from their site:
The Tour d'Afrique is a 94-stage race broken up into 8 sections. It includes 22 rest days, 2 untimed stages, and 2 days of travel across Lake Nasser for a total of 120 days. The overall winner is the cyclist who achieves the lowest accumulated time.
Also this, which gives the impression that it's more casual than what you'd generally call a "race".
There are three basic types of participants:
· Expedition riders, who make up the majority of participants, and who cycle the daily distances at their own pace.
· Racers, who intend on racing all the way or for 1 or more Tour sections. See Race
· Sectional riders who ride a portion of the Tour, from a 1-2 week section to half or more of the distance.
