Australian cyclist Robbie McEwen is back on top just two months after an injury forced him out of the Tour de France, to win the Paris-Bruxelles on Saturday, 15 September, in trademark McEwen fashion.
The feisty Australian sprinter fought off attacks from rival cyclists in the final dash to the finish line to defend his crown and secure his third consecutive title.
Claiming his first Paris-Bruxelles race victory in 2002, McEwen’s fourth win on the weekend has resulted in the Belgium resident becoming the most successful rider in the Paris-Bruxelles’ 87-race history.
"It was a very nervous final 40 kilometres,†said Robbie McEwen. “It was very fast and it wasn't possible for one team to control the peloton, though our team always had guys in the attacks."
"(Thor) Hushovd took off hard with 350 metres to go, but the Crédit Agricole rider made his break too early,†said McEwen.
"The last metres were very difficult. I died ten times during the sprint, the last 100 metres was really on the limit.â€
“But good, I won, which was the important thing!â€
“To win the same race four times, that's something improbable. It's fantastic."
The single day race from Paris to Brussels was first held in 1893 and covers a distance of approximately 220 kilometres.
SBS will broadcast the Paris-Bruxelles race highlights on Sunday 30 September from 12.30-1.30pm.
