Contador and this years TdF.

Postby norbs » Mon May 30, 2011 9:54 am

I just added a new poll to my blog asking if Contador should be allowed to ride in this years TdF.

http://norbs.tk/bl

Would love to hear thoughts from both camps. Been chatting to a couple of cycling mates from either side and I am finding it fascinating.

My view is no. A very poor look for the sport.

Poll or No Poll. It makes no difference.
By the rules, Contador can ride Le Tour De France. :)
If you are going to have rules, then that's how it is.
All the media debate, and personal/ill-informed vile, means FA.

You're right, you should rally your "mates" around the campfire,
and chat about it over a Latte. 8)
No worries.

What is this latte you speak of? If it is a camp fire and mates, it has to be beer, or port, or port in beer. :D

Meh! More interesting was hearing "Norbs" mentioned during Saturday night's telecast of the Giro. Could it be you? The other mention was of the Dulwich Hill club.

Can't the ASO (who own the Tour) stop anyone from participating. I thought there was a rule about riders "being under investigation" (ie Puerto in 2006) but Contador is not under investigation with his case judged (not withstanding the UCI and WADA appeals etc).

The Teams are invited to participate.
ProTeam Team Saxo Bank-SunGard is one of the Teams, Contador is the Team Leader.
Contador, is Last Year's 2010 Tour De France winner.
Contador, is the 2011 Giro Winner.
Contador, is the best Tour rider in the World, ATM.
Contador, is likely to cleansweep the Grand Tours this Year.
Contador, has gone through proceedings, and is under no suspension.
(regardless of the appeal, which may not succeed, and surprise the media, and many others)
Would the ASO stop Contador from competing (your call) :?:

Yes, if Contador's participation has been deemed to be bad publicity, potentially leading to loss in advertising and sponsorship, and generally bad for the business. Time will tell.

I do not know hweter Contador is guilty or not but the ASO have taken action that resulted in the defending champ not being able to race when they banned Astana which included Contador in 2008(even though he rode with Disco in 2007).

I guess it shows they are not afraid to make a call either way.

Let him ride, but only if they play the Panamanian national anthem on the victory dais. Or the Venezualan, Botswanan, Eskimoan...

ASO banned Astana which included Contador in 2008.
ASO said it made the decision based on the doping scandals of the previous two years.
Contador was cleared of any complicity in those scandals.
I don't believe Team Saxo Bank-SunGard has betrayed the organiser's confidence,
by being involved in any doping scandals.
I cannot believe Saxo Bank-SunGard will be banned, by the ASO, for 2011 TDF-
but FME, anything can happen in Cycling. Even Lance could be guilty. :o

Brento, agree with your comments about Saxo Bank Sungard and acknowledge the situation with Astana was different (although I thought my comments were quite clear that ASO banned Astana, not Contador individually). I was just highlighting the fact that even though Contador is the defending champion, it didn't help Astana.

can anyone confirm what happened with Tom Boonan's participation when Albie Davis went to the presentation then the airport the day after (when with Quick Step). Did ASO not allow him to race (cocaine positive) but he apealed to CAS and got a start??? Maybe the same thing could happen again if Contador doesn't get a spot.

Will be interesting to watch for sure.

Actually you raised a good point about the Boonen case, one that to be honest I didn't know about. Given that, I don't think the ASO can stop Contador from racing the Tour.
