You showed them ALL Cadel.

Well done to you and the team. Makes Silence Lotto understand what they really missed out on !!!

Great gutsy rides over three weeks, but especially Stages 17, 18 and 19 when almost everyone kept predicting you would crumble. Hah !!!

I remember thinking back in the 90s that I was sick of hearing about this Evans kid winning everything on the junior local XC scene.
Then ditto for the local seniors XC scene.
Then he went overseas and I thought he would be shown up.
But he won and I was genuinely happy for him that he was the real deal.
Then he won the World Championship and I was amazed.
Then he quit and became a road rider and I thought that that was a bad move.
Then he disappeared from my view until Phil Liggett starting mentioning his name in the TDF.
Then watched (almost) every second of his 2007-2008 campaigns.
Was convinced he wouldn't win it.
Saw him win the worlds and thought at least he's got that.
Then hoped things would change with the new Hincapie led BMC team.
Then thought he'd lost it on stage 18 this year.

But last night....

Well done Cadel. It's been a long, long ride.

Amazing bounce back out of that 2010 ditch. Perfect ITT after two gutsy mountain stages. Congratulations and respect!

I've followed Cadel since the late 90's when I first got into MTBing. He was my idol back then, watching him dominate the MTB XC World Cup circuit and so forth. I remember my year 9 & 10 school diary & books were all covered in photos of him riding for Volvo Cannondale. To now see him on the top step of the TdF podium is amazing and is truly well deserved. As many have said couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Well done, we are very proud to call you one of own :).

My first real introduction to cycling was naturally standing on the champs elysse in 2005. I wanted to watch armstrong win on the final day and I did. I caught up with my mate the next day and we spoke about "this aussie bloke who came 8th". My mate, with more cycle brain than I, said he would one day win the tour. From then on, I have watched him as much as I could. Now, my mates prediction and my wish for him has come true. All our late nites, bad next days at work are worth it for us now he has shown his skill and brilliance.
His team, wow, they really delivered him to the right spot every race. His work in the Alps was nothing short of amazing. And last night, well, I had tears in my eyes when he was crying.

A life changing moment for Australian sport and hopefully, Australian culture. Im hoping he is able to use his new status to help promote the sport of cycling in our country and promote cycle safety as a whole.

An amazing three weeks!!

Congrats Cadel!!!!!

I am pretty new to cycling but have always enjoyed watching The "Tour", just seeing the fitness and passion is what got me interested,
watching Cadel Evans ride last night was just fantastic, not once did he show any signs of not being able to do it, K after K ripping out time, then putting time onto his lead, just briliant.

He seems like such a nice, humble guy, I hope he wins many, many more, it made me proud to be a Cyclist, even more proud to be an Aussie.

Great work, a perfect ride, with a fantastic team.

Now I cant sleep.I suppose 0300 is a bit early to go for a ride. Maybe I could just clean my bike.
See how I feel at the end of the tour I may just be keen for a ride :)

Exactly. My kids are just old enough to understand what he has achieved and they have been luck enough to meet Cadel. My son is only 6yo. All he wants to do now is ride his little bike. Brings a tear to my eye.

Thanks Cadel.

I read and heard a number of times in the last 24 hours that Cadel's win is up there with Australia winning the America's cup in the '80's.
Well, I reckon that is a load of cr@p!! The America's Cup was an ego trip for millionaire businessmen - and out of the realms of the 99% of the population, whereas Cadel may inspire a whole new generation to cycling - a relatively cheap sport available to almost everyone.

Well if you can ride 3,431km in 21 days faster than the Schleck brothers you're welcome to it.

And congratulations again Cadel and all that helped you win, for the tour is a team effort. However, in your case, your individual effort cannot be overplayed - the 2+ minutes you got back in Stage 19 with no help from your team or a bizarre non response from the peleton, and the 1'50" you got back in the ITT. Your comeback from 07 and 08 is a huge lesson for another generation of Aussies to never give up in the pursuit of a heart inspired goal.

I hope Chiara and you enjoy the victory, and more time together for well deserved R&R.

Congratulations Cadel and Team BMC!

What a mountainous effort. I think that a quote from Lance is in order, “that was a demonstration”!!

Cheers,

"Firstly, he appears to be intelligent."

Yep the sports journos are outright confused and they aren't used to dealing with non-footy boofheads (rugby union players aside eg Nick Farr-Jones or Peter Fitzsimmons type)...how do they deal with a multilingual bon vivant like Cadel?
