Tour Down Under

Postby europa » Sun Jan 20, 2008 10:12 am

The TDUstarts today with the traditional criterium at Genelg :D

That's always a fantatistic race with a fantastic atmosphere. Get there early to grab a spot by the fence because there's always a very large crowd.

Sadly, I won't be there, I'll be watching AU getting thumped at Hindmarsh :( ( :( for missing the race and :( for the tattered remains of the strongest team in the league - thanks Viddie :( ). I did suggest to the lad that we go to the cycling instead ... sometimes a parent realises that cowardice is the safer part of parenting  (the kid's obsessed)

You're joking! That's flamin' pathetic. What'd they have on instead?

Oh hang on. It was the weekend. All our news comes in from Squidley or Melboring and they ignore anything not in their back pocket :?

Really? I thought there was nightly highlights at 6pm, I think SBS.

Or does it start tonight? Maybe weekdays only, or something. But there's definitely a highlights package.

The ABC news on the radio mentioned it this morning. I was surprised but pleased. Cadel's name was mentioned too...the things that man did for cycling last year...what a flow on effect.

G'day

Couldn't find anything in the Australian today either, but cycling did get a mention. One article was titled "Top-level push to clear doping doubt on Davis" and the other was "Golden double for track team." Sorry but couldn't find the articles on the Australian website.

Regards
Andrew

As I understand it, that Down Under Classic criterium race isn't a part of the Tour Down Under pro tour race. Just a lead up.
Bianchi, Ridley, Tern, Montague and All things Apple :)

And ????

It is the 10th Anniversary of the event, the 1st Pro Tour event outside of Europe (not that it counts for much) the biggest bike race in Aus, etc.

The local paper had some stuff, but nothing on any of the national TV stations and nothinbg in the programming guide for any channel today.

Watched the 30 min highlights package - excellent win by the Aussie lad Mark Renshaw !!! and O'Grady in 6th place :D

It was interesting to see how the two experienced pros outfoxed the UniSA rider (Richie Porte) at the bonus sprints, but it would have been a great learning lesson for him, and raised his profile with all of the people watching.

A bit warmer for todays Stage 2 with a max of 33 degrees and a bit blustery.

Got about 80 photos today and they all came out pretty good, just got to upload them. Looking forward to watching the stage tonight as the route contains pretty much parts of all my regular loops 8)

Did anyone else see the takedown in the final sprint today (the one that resulted in the Italian dude getting disqualified from the event)?

My god, poor sportsmanship like that really makes me wonder... can't beat the guy fairly so why not make him crash... appalling.

I watched it a couple of times and it looks deliberate. A pity there isn't more info or perhaps a different camera angle. I'm wondering if there was some sort of lead up, perhaps some bad blood between them some time earlier in the race.

When Stuart O'Grady got penalised in TDF 2006, the problem was that their handlebars got locked but it looked quite different from different angles.
If the R-1 rule is broken, what happens to N+1?
