rode the paris-roubaix challenge today, 170kms including the 50kms of cobble sectors the pros are doing tomorrow and got to finish in the velodrome :D

it was bone shaking, great day out though.

off to see the race tomorrow, can't believe they race on this stuff, it's quite ridiculous.

How cool is that!

How were the cobbles? Bad or survivable? What size tyres did you run? Any punctures?

well. . . i survived, the very first section though, which came after 14kms of the 170 i was really wondering what i had got myself into.

each section consumes you, you can concentrate on nothing else but getting through it (or you could end up going over the handlebars as one of the guys i was riding with did in the arenberg - which is next level insanity), you shudder, you grip the handlebars so hard by the time the end of the section comes you cannot pull them off the bars, you are on the edge for every section and some of them seem like there is only a 5cm line in the middle that's rideable.

the pictures I have seen on TV the last few years don't even begin to show you how crazy they are.

but having said all that, it was an amazing day out on the bike, rode with 4 guys from the UK and have memories for life. :D :D :D

tomorrow, i get to watch.

tyres: continental "ultra race" (?) - 23

and no punctures, i spent a lot of the time worried about getting one though. but there were mavic cars/scooters on hand to help people.

oh and i saw some peeps doing it on a tandem.

+1

That photo shows what a steep crown the "road" has, looks bloody hard to ride alone at speed let alone surrounded by other bikes.

O'Grady and Hayman in the break. Can either stay away from so far out?

Looks like Arenburg didn't cause the usual drama.

Next section has, though. Geraint Thomas a high profile participant.

Radioshack having to do a lot of work alone ... no one wants to help Spartacus.

A couple of the pro's are giving the "over the handlebars" a go. What a cracking pace the boys have.

I wasn't going to stay up, but I am glad I did, what a great race, coming down to track tactics at the end for an unexpected way for Cancellara to win. Amazing ride by Vanmarcke. Pity Stybar had an incident & lost their wheel

Woww Fabs having to be carried to the podium.. I'm not so sure he was bluffing going back to the team car etc, looked like a real struggle to me. Great race.

Fab was a little bit concerned with Vanmarcke sticking around, tried once to shake him, that didn't work. Luckily he's in great form and watched a few Chris Hoy video's beforehand. Great race the whole way, so much happening all the time, anything can and was happening.

Something needs to be done with Phil and Paul.

I don't think I can stand them anymore.

The trophy being a cobblestone, I liked Hank's line that if Spartacus won again he'd be able to pave his own driveway.

Amazing race... Close to the best Paris Roubaix that I have seen!
I don't know how Spartacus did it... Drive and determination overcoming his body's limits!

Im not sold on how serious that attack was from Cancellara. I don't think he had a serious attack in him and IMO it was more of a 'give it a shot and see if he cracks/remind him who he is up against even if it doesnt work' type attack. Great race. Fell asleep with about 55kms to go, woke up at 2am and pressed play on the t-box and did the ironing to make sure I didnt fall asleep again

The fumes from Ironing lycra a bound to keep you awake.

On the Cancellara attack, I think they were pretty tired after the long ride and both of them involved in strong offensive rider. Don't thing either of them had a lot left in them and Cancellara banked on his experience over Vanmarcke.

Feel sorry for Stybar missing out on the chance - was looking forward to that.
