UCI Road World Champs

Postby bvella » Tue Sep 24, 2013 10:36 am

Been a great start for Australia, getting medals in all four events to date, including silver for OGE by under a second in the Mens TT, and Damien Howson winning gold in the U23 TT.

Terribly close for the TTT! Would have been great to see them get gold.

Tip for the Men's road race?? Sagan has been in great form, he'd have to be up there

No surprise on the Martin, Wiggins & Cancellara on the podium for the ITT.

Claims that Porte or Dennis might make the podium shown to be wildly optimistic
1 Tony Martin (Germany) 1:05:36.65
2 Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain) 0:00:46.09
3 Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland) 0:00:48.34

12 Rohan Dennis (Australia) 0:03:09.33

17 Richie Porte (Australia) 0:03:22.82

Martin set the fastest average speed in a WC ITT. His speed would have finished 6th in TTT.

Caleb Ewan placed fourth in the under-23 championships on a course that didn't suit him.
He sprinted well in the bunch, and was unlucky to not finish third, after such a hard ride,
and with very little help from the rest of the "Team"
He has a great future, from what I saw, as it was a hard race with many breakaways.

Great women's race too...Tiffany Cronwell rode so well, descended like she was on rails to bridge the gap...just got out classed on the climb on the final lap.
Kudos to Vos for a classy break to TT the final few k's.

Shame that the weather is crap for the men's race...been a few spills and flats already!

Well done Rui Costa. The Spanish lost it when Valverde didn't chase Costa. A huge tactical blunder. Clarke got seventh.

^+1 It seems Purito agrees with you Biker J
Cyclingnews wrote:"The situation was perfect for Spain, because I told Alejandro to go on the wheel of whoever chased after me,” Rodriguez said, his voice still raw. “When I saw Rui Costa come across alone, I didn’t understand what had happened, but I knew I was riding for second."

Shame about Cadel & David Tanner, a trip to the hospital is never fun.

I just watched the Simon Clarke interview on Cycling Central and can see the toll the race took - he was VERY emotional - obviously happy to have placed so well, but also an apparent sense of 'Holy crap, what just happened in that race?' to his demeanour.

The lads and ladies did our country proud this past fortnight.

Paolo Bettini is always good for a headline - "I'd rather finish fourth than loose the race like Spain did."

Spain lost it, but Rui Costa is a great biker. Probably he will never win a Grand Tour, but he will win a lot of classic races and stages
