I know this is old news. Have mixed feelings about his decision to essentially quit. Seems it is fully supported by the team. Trek aren't exactly setting the house on fire, although have a couple of riders thereabouts, and he isn't a goat so hills aren't his forte. Does he have a role to play helping out Schlek?
I have a view that the Tour is the biggest thing in cycling and an opportunity to ride it is a chance of a lifetime. Sure he has other fish to fry, but geez, it reeks of thumbing your nose at the Tour and all it represents.
Thoughts... Agree, disagree, opinions...

Many riders have had scheduled exit point on tour. Nothing special. Given the state of Trek, guess he is not interested in enduring the mountains for another go at ITT.

From a team perspective and personal perspective, focusing on achieving a first or at least high placing in a major event in a month's time (world ITT) will be better than staying around in the tour and making up the numbers and finishing 158th or whatever.
Though there is still the tour ITT coming up, it's after 3 punishing mountain stages [plus the 3 they've already had] which could, as let's face it he's no longer a spring chicken, ruin his chances for the stage and impede his recovery and prep for the World's ITT.
He's already ridden in several tours, so it's not the chance of a lifetime.
Weighing all that up, I think he's made a good decision.
He's a professional rider - he's taken a professional decision and that was probably suggested by the directeur sportif (sp?). He is worth waaaay more to Trek on the podium of a ITT championship than second or third fiddle in a Grand Tour.
Maybe he had a look at Tony Martin's killer ride on that massive breakaway and stage win he took and thought bugger that , I've got no chance in the itt. Similarly his team has no chance on GC. Makes sense then, to be in top form for the world champs later in the season.
