Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España, Tour Down Under and more

Belgian based pro cycling team Silence-Lotto announced that twice Tour de France runner up Cadel Evans has signed a contract for the next two seasons. This dispels the rumours of the Australian looking for a different to pin his hopes on winning the Tour in 2009.
Evans has had stage victories in the Ruta del Sol, Paris-Nice and the Coppi e Bartali this year.

TL, curious as to why ? Too many up and coming young stars already ? Would this suggest by next year no one will expect a podium finish for him ?
No idea here, just curious..Pete

I thought maybe Gerolsteiner. They have some solid riders in Lang, Rebellin and Schumacher, could have given Cadel some real support.
Seem to aim more for the classics I guess, and the emergence of Kohl may have been a factor.
Still I would have thought that having the (possible) TDF winner on your team was the best advertising a sponsor could get. Takes it to another level beyond just the cycling world. Everyone has heard of the TDF.

Before the tour I would have said Gerolsteiner but yeah Kohl is looking really strong.2 or 3 teams folding this year..not a good year for getting a contract.
Don't think Cadel would sit well with a Spanish team, plus they are all full of GC riders.Garmin have their GC rider.Quickstep still haven't got a sponsor for next year and are more interested in Boonen and the classics,CSC have 3 riders although may well lose Carlos next year.Maybee Tinkof but if Robbie is going there whats the point, plus they are not gauranteed a tour start.Astana ...see what I mean...no where for him to go.
Depends on the layout next year which is yet to be announced...Cadel needs a 100k TT's instead of this years 75ish.
Columbia maybee...but obviously not.

Thanks for that Andrew, more bad news for cycling.
Also, looks like Cadel will not be on a Ridley next year but Robbie still will be.
Will be interesting to see what the Silence guys are riding in 09. Cadel fans better hold off on their new bike purchase for a couple of months .

With so many teams folding...means Sil-Lotto should be able to pick up great domistiques, some climbers and possible GC contender other than Cadel.

It’s always hard when you come from a country that doesn’t have a team, not just in cycling, in any sport. The sponsors will always get a better return if their “local boy†gets up and wins. Maybe SIL was his only offer to try and win again. Maybe others offered more but wanted Cadel as a super domistique so their boy could get up. Who knows. All everyone knows is that if he is to win next year, SIL needs a full restructure. Using Robbie as a helper in the mountains just ain’t working.

Silence Lotto is actually shaping up to be pretty strong. Sebastian Lang and Bernhard Kohl have both signed, which means Cadel will (should) have good support in the mountains, unlike this year.
