What's the test, Vander? The standard one picks up microdosing, but only within ten hours, IIRC.

Mustafa Sayar tests positive for EPO in an Algerian race. He won the Tour of Turkey in suspicious circumstances (I recall him riding a steep climb in the big ring and Marcel Kittel tweeting that Sayar was cheating). The cleaner peloton.

RusVelo squad had 3 positive doping controls the other day, following on from one earlier in the year.

The French Senate Report will release names of EPO positives from the 1998 TdF on Wednesday. Rumours are O'Grady will be on the list (he wore the yellow jersey for three days and so would have been tested). Perhaps that explains his early retirement. Names which have been leaked so far are Jalabert, Ulrich, Pantani, Julich, Zabel, Jurand and Desbiens.

As a kid pleaded with his baseball idol 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson during the Whitesox bribery scandal, "Say it ain't so!"

However, common sense suggests that the peleton rode 'dirty' regardless of the various nationalities.

It would certainly be a disappointment if he was named...

Agree with that, although at the time, who could say that many were not.

If it is the case, I'd be more disappointed that he didn't fess up earlier, not that he used it.

Indeed by not admitting to doping by the 1 July 2013 deadline, O'Grady (if shown to having doped in 1998) will be fired and face a four year ban.

The below is from the Vance Report.

4. Past Use Cases of any Rider or Former Rider uncovered after 1 July 2013 that has not been previously admitted to anti-doping authorities

 Starting point 4 year sanction – Aggravating Circumstances
 OGE will cancel the contract

He already announced his retirement.. I'd say he already knows he is going to be named (he had previously said he'd keep going next year), so retirement first. We'll see.

Yep, sadly this is very likely the case.
Also, it seems he won't be working for OGE as most would have expected, but for the TDU.
It's rumoured that Robbie will also be named.

You'd think EPO was less of a temptation to a sprinter, but hey, his contemporary Zabel's been named.

Zabel has already confessed. He and Rolf Aldag were very successful in 6 day track events, so perhaps he needed extra endurance for them.

It's an aerobic sport, even for roadie sprinters (who on the track are enduro riders, not sprinters).

Names named on this list are irrelevant to anything now, IMO. It's simply a statement of facts for history, part of drawing a line under it and moving on. It's what the UCI should have done ages ago.... It's only their incompetence that still leaves a stain on anyone (like SOG, hypothetically) still riding now when the times and the culture have totally changed and they've been proven over and over again for the last 15 years to be riding clean.

It should be no surprise that many (then) young-ish pros were led astray in those pre-Festina bust days. If SOG is named, well, I think it just highlights his character that he has ridden on so long and hard in the years since. Maybe the events of his early career were a driver for him to continue so long, so he would be remembered for his 'clean' achievements since then. Same for anyone else named who continued on from such a start to their pro-career.

In my view, for guys recently retired or still riding, they will have ridden off any doubts about their character by their behaviour since 1998. Those approaching retirement in the late 90s have not had the same opportunity to balance the record on the bike.

Very important to name these names as a deterrent to current day athletes taking certain peptides and other PEDs that currently are undetectable... Other than that, not fussed who was named, as it would be quicker to name those who didn't than those who did...

Given current attitudes there is now NO such excuses or leniency given to those who cheat...
