2016 Giro d'Italia

Postby MichaelB » Tue May 03, 2016 8:50 am

Well, it's just around the corner and it looks like a really good route this year.

The SBS Giro tracker is now updated with the latest route :D , and I'm really looking fwd to seeing Stage 14 in particular, as I'll be riding some of those very same mountains in July

For those that are interested, the link below is to the Official Giro program guide, all 210 pages of pdf colour glory. It's a dual language edition (Italian & English), so grab a copy and settle in.

The weather on some of the high mountain stages will be interesting, as there is still snow forecast and the temps are bloody cold !!!!

Stage 14 will be spectacular. Hopefully it will be a clear day to see the Dolomites in full!

Also looking forward to Stage 19 over the Colle dell 'Agnello. I rode the French side from Briancon and back via the Col d'Izoard. Italian side sound like it will easily split the field!

Image

Especially looking forward to Stage 20 over the Col De la Bonette and then Colle della Lombarda! Rode the same as a monster loop from Barcelonette including finishing over the Colle della Maddalena. Ended with 184km with 5784m elevation gain for the day!

Looking back down the climb around halfway up the Col de la Bonette

Image

Col de la Bonette - looks like they aren't looping over the Cime de la Bonette which is the loop road that traverses up around the pyramid. Rather than just heading through the col (v slot below)

Start of the climb to the Colle della Lombarda!

Anyone know if SBS are live streaming this online, or broadcast on TV only?

They said that about one of the events a while back, but didn't show it. Hopefully that is the case though, cheers! :)

Waiting for the interesting stages to start, so haven't stayed up late yet. Pity to see Peraud crash out, but good that he is OK.
Bugger that Caleb isn't up at the pointy end, got a bit biffed out by the Bardiani rider in Stage 2 - one drawback of his size I guess !!

I'm with you Michael - bit hard to stay up for 5 minutes of sprinting. No one is a patch on Kittel ATM.

I can't say whether Caleb is lacking legs, positioning or luck, but so far he has been well off the pace.

It would appear that the Giro d'Italia organiser is more interested in attracting a star such as Kittel to their event, by including several pure sprinter stages, than trying to make the event exciting for then fans from the start. By hosting the start in The Netherlands, you guarantee pancake flat stages which Kittel is pretty much guaranteed to win. Boring.

Pretty disappointing, the coverage IS live... but starts approx 2 hours into each stage.

Hope that Adam H can keep going after his stack, no details yet of any injuries.

Lots of minor stacks (except Peruad's & Dillier's) in Stage 3.

Unless there is an important feature on the parcours early the stage, it nearly always starts a few hours in... I believe you can watch more of each stage if you pay for a Eurosport feed. Or I think the Live streaming online usually starts earlier too?

Its free plus great footage so I'm very happy with SBS now showing the Giro live! :D

I used stream via dial up watching a dodgy feed of the RAI Italy TV footage and then also stream Eurosport English commentary audio to get my Giro fix... :?

At least it isn't like the old Channel 9 "Live" formula one coverage with Darrell Eastlake and Alan Jones. "We'll now cross live as the cars are about to start" - when if you looked online, they were probably about 15 laps from the finish according to the actual F1 live timing.

Thats actually standard. I believe Roubaix, or one of the other classics was actually the first race broadcast right from the start.

Nope. I have Eurosport on Foxtel and its the same. SBS tells me they all rely on the same feed from the one licenced broadcaster, and their rights are only for part of each stage.
I was v disappointed as the Stage 3 coverage started just after they left my family's town in holland.

Interesting to know.

Streaming is currently online and the TV footage is still to start, so possible to see a little more...

Great stage last night, especially at the end. Great to see Chaves doing well and Doumolin sticking it to the rest of the field.

Eurosportplayer.com starts at the same time as it does on SBS here - I think it's just the deal they have negotiated around the whole world, the quality is far better than SBS streaming though (unless that was simply my laptop and wifi giving me grief the other night).

Didn't manage to watch all of last nights stage, but turned out to be a cracker.

With Landa now out, Zakarin managing to hang in the key favourites losing a few seconds to some of the other 2nd string guys and Ryder losing his time as normal, the next few stages leading up to St 14 are going to be really interesting.

Will it be that it's a favourite that goes for it and becomes the winner, or will it be more like who is left standing ?

Great to see that Chaves is still hanging in there :D

Yep no real standouts for me yet, seem to all be biding their time to see who has the legs for week 3

Pozzovivo now seemingly out of contention for a podium and Chaves still doing well. Zakarin obviously not feeling effects of TT crash yet. Piti is still as slimy as ever.

REALLY looking fwd to Stage 14 and those last few with the other big climbs as well.

Oh yeah piti was working with Nibali at all times  At least it is now obvious that movistar have a two leader strategy.

Stage 14 looks brutal on paper - will anyone have the legs & courage to attack? An animated stage would be great but this Giro is shaping as a war of attrition
