Vuelta 2017 - lucky last ?
Postby MichaelB » Fri Aug 04, 2017 10:41 am
The route has some crackers in it, opening with a short 13.8km TTT, and the follows up quickly with some significant climbs as early as Stage 3, steep MTF typ finish on Stage 5 (~300m ascent in 3km), cat 1 climb near the end of Stage 8 with pinches approaching 20%, Stage 11 with 2 x Cat 1 climbs in the last 45km, Stage 14 & 15 have big climbs & heat, lots more mountains and a 42km ITT, and then the Stage 20 jewel, the climb of Alto de L'Angrilu.
SBS is meant to be broadcasting live too, so triple bonus.
Bring out the Jamon !!!
Orica will have an interesting team, with the plan to have both Yates's as well as Chaves. - Could it be the 1st GT win ?

Surely Landa can't be going after having done the Giro & Tour ?

The Alto Hoya de la Mora is a more steady climb, which I quite enjoyed, It is a shame that they aren't going higher up the mountain as it goes up to 3400m. I understand why they are stopping at 2500 as there is a carpark here for all the support & TV crews to set up. The road that goes to the top from here is pretty narrow, and at the top it is very degraded.
I hope it is a cracker.

It's a case of "being killed by your own success". It's not just the ever growing TV and team footprint but also the increased number of fans (especially the fan-wits) who'd need to be managed up there. No longer just a handful of people...tomness wrote:The Alto Hoya de la Mora is a more steady climb, which I quite enjoyed, It is a shame that they aren't going higher up the mountain as it goes up to 3400m. Not the way you like to see it happen as Valls has had a pretty unlucky run of outs, but glad to see he's back in there getting his chance to continue the streak. Maybe not being selected originally will light a fire under him and he can chase a stage win (assuming he's given some freedom).biker jk wrote:Amazing. I laughed when I read Velonews count TJVG as a contender - seriously even TJ's mum doesn't think he can win.
Do I stir Chuck & refer to contador as the token Spanish hope ?

Not long at all it seems. Oh well, still has one for his collection now !!MichaelB wrote:Nice to see Rohan at the front. How long can he keep it ?
Stage 3 will be interesting with a parcours like this !! Will someone make a solid breakaway and stay away ?

A huge shake up of the GC & its only stage 3. While the shake up was accurately predicted, I wonder whether the next week will settle down with no major changes in the GC contenders.

Looking fwd to some of the other stages.
Froome's helpers seemed to run out of puff, so that is also interesting !!

Apparently he didn't listen to Joaquim RodriguezMichaelB wrote:agree there find_bruce - also that the stage winner only got there because he caught up on the descent. Would have been a very different GC list if it had finished on the climb !!
If you've got 10 metres of an advantage at the top of the Cornella, then it'll be almost impossible to catch you on the descent

Chavito looked like he was relaxing following Froomey in St3, so could it be his tonight ?
Another couple of top 10 GC contenders (Majka & Pozzovivo) lost big chunks of time, so a good result is looking hard for them.
Will be interesting !!
