20th TdU - 2018

Well, it's on again with the Women's TdU (gotta get a better name ..) and Nettie Edmonson nabbing the 1st stage to keep the Edmonson family winning streak running. A bit cooler for the girls today, and the rain forecast may even make it a bit treacherous out on the course. Menglers hill at the end today !!

Great to see the HUGE increase in cyclists round the city, so really looking fwd to the great stuff continuing into next week. I get a birds eye view each day as I can see the Tour Village from where I work

Did a small piece for BNA on the three great things in the 20th Ed of the TDU - feel free to share and add your favourite things about the TdU

So who's gonna win the WTDU and who is the favourite for the Men ?

Channel 9 kills the livestream of the People's Choice Classic to go to the cricket with two laps to go. Please TDU organisers, give the event broadcasting rights back to SBS.

I've sooked on their Facebook page, twitter and Channels 9's Facebook page.
The feed went to a page that said we couldn't stream the cricket because it was live on TV.

Kristoffer Halvorsen managed to finish despite the crash, but has broken a bone in his hand and will miss the TDU.

The technical excellence of Ch9's sporting broadcasts is counterbalanced by the stupidity of their programing decisions. Stopping the broadcast of an event in order to say "you can't watch the cricket" is dumb, even by their standards.

The schedule on their site said 7.45-8.45.
It stopped dead on 8.45, suspect that no one monitors it and the programs start and stop without human intervention.

TDU organisers need to ensure they are maximising their sponsors exposure by ensuring good coverage, not just going to the highest bidder who then chooses not to show it live on TV or even take the streaming seriously.

SBS takes cycling (or it seems to?) seriously

Stage 3 for the pros has been shortened with some of the finishing loops lopped off in Victor.

Given that it’s gonna be 41 on Friday as well , that’s the end of the Challenge tour I reckon.

Good to see Greipel take st.1. Always the good bloke.

I have my eye on young Canty. We'll see what he can do, esp. with the heat on.

Caleb stuffed the finish today after a perfect leadout.
Wont do that again.

Wont stop the armchair critics giving him a hard time.

Pity though. Viviani deserved the win, he was flying. Dlamini is riding well for the KoM points.

Maybe Caleb was a bit rooted, as when he finally saw Viviani, he seemed to only sprint seated ?

Channel 9 have #$%^'ed the coverage again on Willunga Hill - firstly, showing ONLY Richie Porte from the helicopter shot, rather than widening the angle so we could see by how much he was gapping McCarthy, and second by cutting away from the finish line shot about 2 seconds before the 2nd place finisher crossed the line, making it impossible for the viewer to judge the crucial time gaps.

Storming ride by Richie and Impey.

He climbed really well and is now a shoe in for the GC.

Great day of racing.

Was out riding, so missed how the Movistar guy went down ?

I normally put up with 9 being average so long as it's on and live, but that finish coverage was disgraceful. To ignore Impey finishing to see who actually is leading the GC, to instead show shots of Sagan limping up giving high 5's to spectators was incredibly bad and unprofessional. Every year that host seems to pick up nothing about the sport as well after covering it for quite a few years now.

Bloody hell, what a pack of whiners.

We had a brilliant race with a some really different winners, and all anyone can do is complain ???? WTH ?

Ch9 may not have been brilliant, but at least it was free to air and most stages live.

I’m pretty disappointed in the posts here that all people could do was complain.

Maybe I’m weird and thought the TdU was about the riders and the racing, not the broadcast.

Oh well

This is another one of those posts in Cycling Tips where the power numbers are explained for us mere mortals to wonder at.

Some of the numbers are staggering, and especially given the temps and what they'd been doing for the last few days. The numbers are staggering, and not just Porte's numbers on Willunga, but some of those done by team mates on the flat approaching Willunga for the final time.

During the TdU, had an opportunity to have a meet & greet on Friday (and ICE event) and Brenton Canty mentioned that his AVERAGE HR up Norton Summit that day was 194, with a peak of 205  . We also heard from Mauro Gianetti, Ulissi and Rui Costa as well as a small cameo from Gerrans.

Man, they were all skinny as and had veins popping out everywhere !!

I thought it was ok. In fact, I'd rather see Ch 9 have all of the cycling if it means Keenan is nowhere to be found. Or Henk Pedals. Camera work wasn't really any worse than the Spanish races (The gold standard for crappy  )

My only sook was the missing final two laps from the Peoples Choice Chrit.
The rest of the coverage was OK as far as i could see. Working in Perth for that week did make it a bit tricky to watch live.

In the afterglow of this and watching all the great riding around the event, I am keen to work out how I can get there next year.
Leave pass may be difficult though.

Do whatever is necessary, as, without being biased, there is some brilliant riding around here :D
