Wonderful news. Some great climbs and very scenic ocean roads.

Wonder if the route for the Gong ride could eventually be adjusted to encorporate part of the men’s road race route? Would be cool.

It's the World Championships, not the World Cup.

Cue Alan Jones thundering away from behind his microphone in righteous indignation.

It's kind of hard to believe that event is coming here, to NSW of all places. There is still time for our politicians to mess it up. Wonder if riders will be stopped for riding furiously, or not having bells...

I'm shocked - the most anti-cycling state in the country and we somehow land this event! :o

Actually, pity it wasn’t done in SA (yes, I’m biased) but would be easy to do some great routes in Adelaide !!

Great news for Australia, and especially NSW, which has seemed anti-cycling for many years. I can see the Road Races starting in Sydney, most likely at the Opera House, and heading down to the Gong via the Royal National Park and the coast road (will they require a police escort down from Stanwell Tops to keep the pace down, as happens for the Gong Ride?) I"m sure there will be a trip up Macquarie Pass, and the obvious place for a feed station would be the Robertson Pie Shop. Head back down via Jamberoo and it will be a ripping course. It's really been since the days of the Commonwealth Bank Cycle Classic that NSW has had a real International cycle race, so I wish it all the best, and hope that all of NSW, and Australia gets behind it.

Thats not going to happen, shutting Sydney down... no chance.
I believe it will start and finish at Wollongong.
How about we start at Diggies cafe North Beach where all the bunch rides start from, head north up Builli Pass, north on the old highway to Helensburgh, drop down to Stanwell Tops, could add in an excursion up through the National park to Garie Beach, return south through the Park, drop down Bald Hill across the Seacliff bridge and down through the Gong again, then a south loop which goes up Maq Pass and down Jamberoo Pass, through Jamberoo into Kiama, then back north to finish at Wollongong harbour.
So many great options.
PS I was just joking about Diggies

I think we will get to race the course before the worlds - how cool will that be.

Just wait till Alan Jones gets on his high horse.

Sad really, as I guess any city in Aus could do a great job.

Hope it goes well, they have a great course and that the locals support it.

For those that mention a course, climbs or loops, how about making a course via RWGPS etc and have a link here for us out of towners, as the names sound nice, but doesn't mean anything.

Cheers

Still have mixed feeling - brilliant work on pitching Australia, brilliant for Wollongong and it is a nice town who have been particularly receptive to cycling and cycling events.

But it misses out on Sydney and such a brilliant opportunity to showcase the city... a start in Wollongong - ride up past Homebush and then bobbinhead, Akuna, Palm Beach and across Sydney habour with a loop past Bondi and into the city and then finale in the Rocks (and presentation in front of the Sydney Opera House)... that would be gold.

Thread Dig… a lot has changed and Covid is a reality and although Australia started comparatively well, even though the numbers in Australia are low, the political behaviour and resulting public and media freakout means it looks like an undesireable place to travel to and be in.

No surprises, the Tour Down Undee has been cancelled. The World Championships are in September 2022, just under a year and a lot of time for things to change.

Are there any thoughts or concerns about the event taking place full-scale and with all nations attending?

The reality of Covid is that it will not go away, rather it is a new norm that changes daily life - from vaccinations to daily hygiene rituals. Australia is following a slower and stricter approach to many other nations and I wonder if it will be ready in time.

There should be a full history of vaccinations and testing from anyone coming here and by reputable Drs that can be verified.

Seriously, the admin and rubbish to get properly verification or authentification for each individual overseas jurisdiction is a mess…

The paper and digital verifications and mandatory testing before flying and after landing woukd go a long way.

Japan and the Olympics showed how it can happen if you want it to happen.

But this is not Japan, this is Australia and an uniquely special environment/circumstances.
