STOLEN NSW: 2009 SPECIALIZED STUMP JUMPER EXPERT CARBON MTB
Postby legal_eagle » Thu Jul 09, 2009 7:24 pm
2009 Specialized Stumpjumper Expert Carbon Mountain Bike - size 17
This is a brand new bike and was stolen between April/May 2009. The person responsible competes in cross-country & we know the bike was used in one or two events at the end of May. These are facts supplied to the freight company by the person involved. This is not assumption on my part. The bike was last seen on the 19th May by the freight company when left at a block of flats in Mosman NSW.
The person responsible has also scammed another mountain bike together with other MTB accessories. It is believed the person has also imported tyres from the USA to use on my bike. We know these people have also scammed other items not related to MTB.
I am offering a reward for the return of my bike and an additional reward if these people are brought before the courts.
There is also Police investigation in regards to this theft together with private investigators employed to work on the case. Please PM any information. All information provided will remain confidential as to its source.
I am lead to believe the person may resides in the Cremorne area.

Interested to know how you know so much information about the possible thief, and what more information the forum could provide?
Is this a one guy job? or an organised bike stealing racket?
Information on the scam so we can make sure to avoid it?

Interesting the 'seller' has no contact details for a $4000 bike.
On another forum both of these ads have been pointed out to the OP but no response yet as to whether this is the bike the OP is looking for.

I re-read a post from this afternoon when I got home and it didn't make any sense. I raised some questions about the OP but now I have had time to think about what I said I am withdrawing my accusations.
Apologies to the OP. Having your bike stolen sucks. Good luck trying to recover the bike.
Cheers

No one in their right mind would buy a bike that was suspected stolen.... would they?
You'd be left high and dry when the police came to reclaim it for the owner.

I think the wording the OP used could leave you a bit confused and skeptical, it probably could of been written a bit better and given a bit more detail.
The OP will probably give more info on the scam at a later date.

Thanks for the explanation. Sorry I have been a bit vague as to the scam but I was advised at this stage to be careful so as NOT to tip off the scammers.
I am also worried that scammer doesnt start to run scared & goes cold trying to sell the bike on gumtree. I am 100% confident that it is my bike.
If someone buys the bike they will also be liable & loose the bike & more than like will be charged with accepting stolen goods. The whole situation could get complicated.
Cheers

Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation. Apologies for being so sceptical but as stated above I have been the vicitm of various scams in the past which has left me overcautious. I started looking through the info on the various sites and wrongly concluded that it didn't add up. I thought the obvious ads were a good lead but now that I think about it, with no contact details for the advertiser, it's not that easy to follow up. I am sorry that you were scammed out of a very nice bike and good luck getting it back.legal_eagle wrote:Hi Cobba,

As I have been asked how the scam works so as to protect others, here is what happened.
I also believe the person or persons who have scammed my bike plus one other bike we know of is on another forum & possibly this forum as well as they competes in XC.
I decided to upgrade my MTB to the tune of $5500 earlier this year but after it was paid for but prior to me collecting it from the bike shop I encountered a personal set back, which probably will not see me ride for at least 1 to 2 years. I have a Detached Retina in my in my left eye which hopefully can be corrected.
As the bike shop were not interested in taking the bike back I had them pack it up into the original box as I did not want it damaged & bring it home for storage in the garage.
I decided to advertise it on Ebay or should I scamBay. I listed it for a buy now of best offer. I received an offer way below what I had paid for the bike but I figured as it had left the store it technically was second hand even though it was brand new & probably worth even less if I couldn’t ride it for 2 years & then have to sell it then.
The buyer was a girl but I was told it was her boyfriend who was buying it but delivery was same address.
He communicated to me via two different email addresses and a mobile contact.
I insisted that I wanted cash when the bike was picked up however they took it on themselves to pay by credit card via paypal for insurance reasons. The payments were drip fed with the first payment taking 4 weeks & the last payment 6 weeks after the sale.
I addressed the box as per his instructions but I included all my contact details as well & he then arranged to have the bike freighted by TNT & delivered to the address in Mosman. The freight company contacted me as they could not contact the buyer on his mobile to say that the address was a block of flats & did I know what unit number.
The buyer then became very abusive to me when I contacted him regarding delivery as to why should TNT phone me & it was none of my business as I had been paid for the bike.
He also abused TNT telling them to leave it in the stair well & stop stuffing round as he had to compete in some XC events the next weekend and that he had also imported tyres from the USA to use on my bike & needed to fit them.
I told TNT under no circumstances was it to be left not signed for. The buyer then signed a TNT authority allowing them to leave unsigned & that he accepts liability.
As soon as the bike was delivered he contacted his credit card company saying his card had been used un authorized. Paypal then reversed the payment & I am now left with no money & no bike.
TNT advised me they delivered another bike to the same address under the same instructions. I have contacted two other ebay sellers who sold these people goods only to be told they had been scammed in the same way. One seller told me they had requested he does not put a return address on the parcel, which the guy thought strange so he registered the parcel complete with sender details & it was returned unable to deliver insufficient address details. He contacted them & they refused to give a unit number. They then gave a unit number but it was returned again not at that address. He was then given another address as C/o another address in Mosman. This address belonged to an elderly gentleman who had dementure & passed away 9 months ago. The property has been vacant for that time while the family prepare it for sale. They were able to collect the parcel from that address.
I believe the scammers live close by & know the movements of the block of flats & that of the vacant house.
The buyers have since cancelled both their email addresses together with the mobile phone number.
It is interesting to learn that Police have just uncovered a credit scam in NSW so I am wondering if it is all connected.
Any information would be appreciated. I will try and answer ASAP but my eyesight is better some days than others.
I just hope the gumtree seller doesn't now run scarred.
Thank you all.

It's disgusting. You would assume Paypal is safe but it is clearly not. This is a massive warning to anyone selling through ebay.Mulger bill wrote:Bloody hell, that's disgusting. Can't this mongrel be traced thru his ebay or paypal id's?

Do they record the brand and model of bikes used in their comps? I'm sure in the least they must take names and address details for application and disclaimer forms??
Hope it all works out... and unfortuantely the lesson of all this... only accept cash, direct deposits or COD for 2nd hand sales.

Yes I have contacted all the clubs & have spoken with some.Chanboy wrote:Are you able to contact the organisers of any of the XC events he may have competed in?

They are on the lookout so there is no way he could compete on the bike. If it sold the new owner has no way of competing on the bike either.

phone numbers
email address's
credit card
paypal
How did TNT get an authorisation form to him, how did he send it back?
Hopefully a link can be found
Cash or direct deposit i think is the safest option for these large sales
Good luck in catching them and/or getting your bike back
