Happy to report that I've got my bike back. My mate stumbled across it locked up no less than 50m from where it was stolen. He called me up and we had a bit of a stakeout, I confronted the guy who came along to unlock it suspecting he had innocently bought it off the thief (who would be dumb enough to park it that close to where it was stolen), he said he had bought it from a garage sale for $400 but when I said it had been reported stolen to the cops and if he came to the station and told them where he got it they might be able to get his money back he said he couldn't remember exactly where he got it from and that he didn't want to get involved with the cops, and that I could just take the bike. Then he changed his story to having bought it off some guy on the street. All very suspicious, he either stole it or knew it was stolen. Either way I got my bike back so I'm super happy.
UPDATE:
My mate spotted someone getting on a train at Melbourne Central with my bike (definitely my bike) today (Wednesday 9/3/11), he was walking in from the Swanston St entrance (which would mean he was walking around with it about 200m from where it was stolen and 100m from me in a lecture at RMIT)
anyway just thought I'd let people know it's still out there so keep an eye out (black frame, red bar tape & front tyre, white wheels, more details below)
Hello all,
My bike was stolen from out the front of RMIT's Swanston St campus on Thursday (3/3/11), would love to get it back as it has a bit of sentimental as well as monetary value (well maybe not compared to a lot of other bikes seen on the forums but I'm a poor uni student).

Hopefully I'll get a photo up soon but if you see a GCR road bike anywhere take a second look at it as they certainly don't seem like the most common bikes on the road, in fact I've never seen another one (I believe they were Shoguns rebranded by Goldcross cycles).
Cheers
Jimi
