New Dura Ace bottom brackets don't last

Postby Bentnose » Fri Nov 24, 2017 6:15 am

I was running my last Dura Ace external bottom bracket for 3 years before it gave up the ghost. It's replacement was the new smaller style ones and it has only lasted 11 months before sounding like a can of marbles. In fact it became so bad so fast I've stopped riding the bike with it in, I can usually put up with a wonky bottom bracket for a while before having to replace it.

Is anybody else having issues with these BB's or did I just get a dud? I've got a new Ultegra one but they are also of the smaller variety now as well, bit worried because I installed a small XTR one on the MTB as well.

My similar slim-line XTR has been in for around 18 months and is still running like new.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Hopefully just a rare dud one then.

Interestingly, the Ultegra BB is a little bigger than the Dura Ace one, it uses a different adaptor plastic tool thingy, wonder if this means bigger bearings and better wear?

I have over 17,000km on an Ultegra 6800 bottom bracket and it's fine.

went through 2 in about 18 months. I think they are made out of cheese. Back to using a good old reliable square taper

I got a Wheels Manufacturing one for my new MTB, may have to move away from the Shimano ones if short lifespans keep occurring.
