Hey guys, i've been working on revamping an 80's bike i found, and have put newer parts on all the worn areas. i've ran into trouble on only one part though; my rear derailleurs cable guide is snapped off. it should look like this;

but instead, the "tube" which allows the transition from exposed cable to covered cable was hanging loosely, then snapped off. I dont really want a singlespeed; so does anyone know how i can fix this problem?

cheers guys :)

you mean the cable guide mount, brazed onto the frame (the white thing in the photo)?

i would just cable tie the cable guide to the chain stay. pack some suitable spacer material in there to provide some clearance between cable/chain stay.

Cable tie may not hold it firm enough. Other than re brazing... try a hose clamp, ugly but secure. Unless you can get a clamp on unit of course.

Hey, thanks for the replies guys :)

at this point in time,i dont really care how it looks, as long as it works.. its the only part thats stopping my whole machine from working. I think its called the cable guide mount; its the part you described, brazed on. somebody conveniently damaged the part beyond repair.. I thought about cable ties, but they wont have enough strength to hold it.

i'll try to get a hose clamp from bunnings :)

Lots of bikes in the 70's came with a clamp on cable guide made by Shimano or Suntour and maybe others.
This was clamped at a similar point to the braze in the pic., but was on top of the chain stay as end point for the outer cable.
Try searching tip shops etc for old ten speeds.
Good luck.......

but this seems to have orientation wrong.

here is a Suntour one.....

Pics are a bit small but that is all I could find.

No, that's the correct bit. Looks just like what I have in my hands.

Hello there il padrone,

you don't happen to have a gear cable holder from the down tube of an 80's Malvern Star Flite that you don't need do you? It's a screw in black plastic thing. Mine snapped in 2 around the bolt that holds it in place, so now it's just hanging on with a cable tie. I may have a metal strap on cable guide in my box of bits but I want the bike to stay as original as possible.

Thanks,
FoM
