Chain Breaker for SRAM Chain Hollow Pins

Postby rgcrgc » Wed Dec 03, 2008 11:28 pm

Am in the process fitting an SRAM chain to my road bike. For the intial fitting (unsurprisingly) I need to shorten the chain by a couple of links. Without really thinking I bought a no-name chain breaker from the LBS but then realised that the SRAM has hollow pins. Do I need a special chain breaker for these or will the generic one work? I am loathe to leap in without advice for fear of borking the chain? Thanks.

If you have to remove a few links to get it to fit, why not try your breaker on the last link, you'll be losing it anyway.

Alternatively, a stumble 'round SRAMs site might give you the drum.

I have a SRAM chain that came with the RED groupset with hollow pins, my normal chain break tool worked fine

Used a regular chain breaker, same BBB one I used for my 9 speed chains.

The pins & outer plates get mangled but you don't use them again anyway.

On some chains I've carefully ground off the "riveted" head so it pushes through easier.

Thanks all. Generic chain breaker worked a treat. Just me being a girt jesse is all.
