gday, recently purchased a single speed giant bike for riding to work etc
have only done a couple rides and notice when i pedal it doesn't feel smooth like it did when first ridden.
i've hardly ridden bikes in recent years and can confess to having sweet FA knowledge on maintenance of them, so thought i'd ask if anyone on here has advice on such things.

Sounds like crank bearings, easy to repair, just need to buy a new bottom end set of bearings and some grease,
Dismantle the crank and replace, if you dont fell confident take it to a bike shop,
keep in mind that the bearing set will be about $10-$20 but most places charge about $60 an hour for labour.
So small things can be costly!

Could also be a dirty chain. Give the chain some TLC and take it for a spin. I know what it feels like to have sand in your chain, feels very rough.

if its only a couple of rides old (I'm assuming its a new bike) then I would look at other things beside the bb straight off.
How does the bike feel when you spin the wheels - do they run freely?
Is the tyre pressure still ok? They may have deflated and making it not so smooth.
Check the brakes - they may have been knocked and be rubbing on the rim.
What's the lube like on the chain.
"doesn't feel smooth" is a bit vague

If you are running the freewheel, ie S/S. It may be the rear cog itself. They are a pretty cheap unit.Mine developed a grinding feel like it had grit in it after a while.Flip the wheel and ride it fixed for a bit and see if the noise stops. At least you will know if it's the freewheel or something else then.

start with the basics and learn from the experience.
Oil the chain. Wipe it clean with a lint free rag (old T shirts are great). Clean the chainring (front) and cog (rear). Keep your fingers well away whilst cleaning. Pump tyres up; go for a ride.

I'm glad you sorted it out BOTB. I would have suggested your chain was too tight, and it still might be the reason. Keep the chain well lubricated (with chain lube - not grease) and you should be fine.
Cheers,
Graeme
