Squeaky shifting
Postby m@ » Tue Jul 20, 2010 4:05 pm
I gave my MTB drivetrain an overdue clean and relube the other day after it got a bit squeaky following a commute in the rain and a muddy weekend at Majura Pines. The chain is running silently again now, but I'm getting a squeak/squeal noise when I shift sprockets at the rear. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? The whole drivetrain apart from the RD was replaced about 18 months ago and has probably done under 500Km, mostly commuting, but the RD is original and has seen a fair bit of action so wondering if it might be an indication that the jockey wheels are due for replacement..?

it's the RD actuator pins/spring. you need to lube them, but they are hard to penetrate with lube. if you can find a reliable means of doing that, let me know.

Yep squeaking sounds like jockey wheels. Your cleaning probably flushed the last of the lube/dirt that was lubricating the jockey wheels. Mine started squeaking when I was a little enthusiastic with petrol degreasing my chain while it was on the bike. I just regreased my jockey wheel but replacing is also a decent option if it needs it.

it's not the jockey wheels if it's only happening when he shifts:
i'll bet a slab of beer it's what i said above, i have the same issue.m@ wrote: but I'm getting a squeak/squeal noise when I shift sprockets at the rear.

If it's the rear, take it off, strip the pulleys off, spray the hell out of the rest with WD40 till it's clean and buy a quick link.

It can still be the jockey wheel as when you shift you put lateral force on the jockey wheel which can briefly cause the squeaking.jules21 wrote:it's not the jockey wheels if it's only happening when he shifts:i'll bet a slab of beer it's what i said above, i have the same issue.m@ wrote: but I'm getting a squeak/squeal noise when I shift sprockets at the rear.
A quick diagnosis will sort it out. If it happens with only chain movement then look at the jockey. If it happens without chain movement then it sounds like the rear mech.

Thanks guys, I can't be sure exactly what the cause was as I just relubed every moving part in the RD - that fixed its little red wagon
Dunno why I didn't do that in the first place, lubing the moving parts of derailleurs and brakes is part of my routine when cleaning the roadie...

couple of drops of lube on the jockey wheel bushes/bearings and its sorted
if i get killed while out on my bike i dont want a 'memorial ride' by random punters i have never met.

Just my chain lube (Tri-flow); it's pretty thin so gets into the moving parts pretty easily.jules21 wrote:what did you use to lube the rear mech, out of interest?
That's the one!alex wrote:agree, ive had this sound and its like a ... 'tweet' noise when you shift
