As long as they work.....

I'd love to try them and see what they feel like, as that is the important part !!

We'll have to agree to disagree.

Bikes need to be beautiful! :)

Will be interesting technology to watch.

I reckon they can do it, but not for the price they are suggesting. Longevity will be interesting as well.

Some interesting considerations when using 135mm hubs on a road bike.

Ta, will read properly when I get the chance,

Looks well written so far, and the info from Spesh is great too.

Some more SRAM Hyd disc setup.

Likely to be called HydroR

Spotted: SRAM Red hydraulic discs win CXLA

Calipers look nice and slim. Levers are tall, but not that bad. It certainly wouldn't stop me from buying and installing the setup !!

Sram Hydraulic Brakes (with a very large rotor)

Doesn't solve one of the key issues imho, and that is wet weather braking.

Meh, the key bit for me is that it seems to be getting closer to sales time

:D

For those who prefer good mechanical disc brakes, a review of Hayes CX5.

Thanks for the info.

Interesting comment re earier failure issue when using the TRP Parabox, and a useful comparison

Editor - 12/16/12 - 5:46pm
LP – No, that was the 1st gen TRP Parabox with ultralight Ashima rotors, not the right combo for screaming down a paved road. These feel much better and are way easier to set up. I’ve felt the TRP system when set up perfectly with their rotors, and it’s good, but it’s very difficult to get perfect and, IMO all of the converters are a stop gap to complete systems that will be here very, very soon. And even then, mechanicals will have a place on less expensive bikes and for those that don’t want to cut, bleed and re-bleed hydraulic systems for internal cable runs. Even my Moots would require disassembly of the hydraulic line because the hose mounts are closed loops.

Agree with the thrust of the article.

And people think I'm stoopid for running a 180mm front disc.

If I could, I'd run a vented one for sure. Possibly a 203 one as well, but many road forks don't have the clearance to run the 180 let alone a 203.

I remember forum members strongly disagreeing with me because I was concerned about some new bikes being specified with a 140 disc on the front. They probably thought I was stoopid too . I'll keep my 185 on the road/CX bike for now.

Let alone being stoopid for even trying discs on a road bike

Hi Michael,

I'm running a 185 and if a 200 (or 203?) would fit, I'd use it right away. The braking with the 185 is IMHO just OK, and this morning I rode my wife's bike with Ultegra front calipers, and my first impression was how weak the brakes felt.

Getting the cable-operated BB7 to clear the disc and still have minimal free-play in the lever is an ongoing problem. like you I'm looking forward to a combo gear shifter/hydraulic brake lever.

cheers

Peter

Hi Pete,

Glad to hear you are still doing well.

I'm really happy with the TRP Parabox on mine, but am looking fwd to trying the new SRAM system when it comes out !!!

I've never had any fade problems running BB7 160s on Lola but there's no Alpine descents on my commute.

The HY/RD is interesting, but fail to see how that is better than the Parabox from the same company.

I didn't comment, as I didn't have an opinion. I think people are getting sick of waiting for "the complete package"

And didn't soem of the old malvern Star/Super Elliot bikes (late 70's ?) have a !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! disc on the rear only - the disc was a very thin sheet metal thing !!!!

Have seen one around town a few times.

I'm still hanging out for the HydroR to arrive from SRAM, and hopefully see the answer from Shimano in 2014 or sooner.

Until then, it's a bit of a in between cludge.
