New wheel makes rattling noise over bumps

Postby mm23 » Wed Dec 01, 2010 1:04 pm

Hi,

I recently purchased a set of Mavic Aksiums to replace the wheels that came with my bike. Since putting them on I have noticed what sounds like a hollow mettalic rattling noise coming from the rear hub. It only does it when the bike is moving at a reasonable speed and I go over some bumps or change gears. I have tried to replicate it by banging the rear wheel against the ground or shaking it vigorously and get nothing. The bike is riding fine and I don't notice any other issues just this strange rattling over bumps and when I change gears.

Does anyone know what this might be? Is it an issue or is it normal with new wheels?

not sure, but could it be the valve stem rattling against the rim? put a blob of bluetack on it and see i s'pose..

Sounds like a valve stem rattle issue to me, esp. on a new set of hoops.

Valve stem and/or loose nut around the valve stem.

Thanks everyone,
The noise sounds a bit loud to just be the valve stem but it doesn't have a nut on it and it does have room to move so it is possible.

I've put a nut on it and secured it with some blutac so I'll find out if it makes a difference on my ride home tonight.

Probably the hub needs need a clean and the QR needs some lube

Loose cassette is my guess - hear it quite often in the bunch.

I would not have bought that new wheel which promises a rattle! It's either quiet (apart from normal freewheel noise) or it's straight back for a refund.

Thanks Drubie you are 100% correct the cassette is loose and the gears are rattling together making the noise.

Would this just be because the LBS didn't tighten it enough? It seems a pretty simple thing for them to get wrong and they are supposed to be one of the better LBS around here.

Dunno. The shimano 10 speed ones just seem to have a habit of loosening (may be confirmation bias, but every time I've heard it it's been a shimano one). Buy a cassette tool and tweak it up every three months I reckon. I wouldn't necessarily blame the LBS straight away unless they forgot to check it when re-assembling your new wheel.

It's a shimano 9 speed. I'd say they probably forgot to check it because it's been rattling since I got it 3 days ago. Also it's an 18 month old cassette off my old wheel that they put on the new wheel and It's never happened before. It doesn't really matter I'm sure they'll have no problem fixing it. It's just a pain having to go back.

You may be missing a thin spacer, if the freehub body is a slightly different length to your old wheel.

I'll throw in another, a spare nipple running round in the hollow rim.

Well I took the wheel back to the bike shop. Apparently it was done up tight and it already had the correct spacer. There was some talk about the cassette being to blame. Anyway they took it off, put it all back together and there was no more movement. The rattling noise has also gone. So I don't know why it was loose but it appears to be fixed.

its never their fault. has to be the hardware you supplied. has a mechanic ever accepted that they may have overlooked something?

It's a bit sad really. A little apology would have been nice. Instead right before I left he says you better watch it in case it comes loose again. I said to him it didn't come loose it's been rattling since you gave me the wheel but he ignored me. So yeah, no acknowledgment they did anything wrong or at the very least failed to check it was tight.
