Couple minutes rattling then ping - can't find what fell off

Postby nutsack » Sat Dec 04, 2010 9:29 pm

Was riding my new slx01 this morning and 25km in on flat road started to hear a rattle that sounded like a couple of gas cylinders in my saddle bag but from lower down.

Before I could take a break and investigate a ping and then the sound of metal hitting thecroad and bouncing off. Stopped couldn't find what fell off or anything missing from my bike (or me) and the bike was silent for the remainder of the ride without any signs of trouble.

Have no idea what came off. Everything important I can sees still attached and no bolts appear missing.

Wheel reflector maybe. No great loss.

Are all your fillings still in your teeth ?

Check under your shoes, maybe a cleat bolt fell out. Otherwise it sounds like a chainring bolt (check both inside & out) or a crank arm cap.
Gas propulsion.......it's natural don't fight it.

The sound was coming from that direction but I am happy to report everything is intact there.

Still not sure what came off but the bike rides fine. Bizarre.

If everything is still working then you probably don't need it!

Guys, the object of the thread has nothing to do with anything that went "ping". It's all about the "new slx01"!

Nice one!

When the item flew off it went left. Is there supposed to be a cap on the left hand side crank that fits into the thread as in the picture above?

Ok then.

How important is the cap, in terms of safety riding the bike for the remainder of the week until I can try sourcing a replacement?

I assume its just a cap and only serves as protection/cover.

You're right. It is just a cap used to protect the bolts from a crud build up.

You have lost a bit of bling though.

Hopefully bike shop can source a replacement from the distributor. Cant seem to find one online from a brief search so far.

The last time I rode and heard a *ping* it was the circlip inside the bottom bracket (BB30) that somehow came out! I only realised that was in fact the case, when 5ks later, the whole left side of the crank end up attached only to my cleat! LOL

Told you so  I know I'm only new here, but I do have extra sensory bike bling detection abilities. My next prediction is you'll now visit your LBS & inquire about a crank arm cap for an FSA SL-K light hollow carbon crank or do the online deal for $10

How much did you buy to save on the £5 shipping, and is it too early to call you a muppet for doing so?

You're missing the point - it's not about saving money, it's having a superfically plausible justification for the crap you've bought and don't really need when the credit card statement come through

Left out the smiley face at the end of my last sentence

I always fun ordering stuff from overseas.

In order to qualify for free shipping I bought :

1 x Fizik PA:K ICS Saddle Bag with Clip - Medium Medium <--- ordered a new Fizik saddle from PBK 2 days earlier
1 x Hope Grip Doctor Bar End Plugs Black - I have silver ones I used with my last bike when I had white handlebar tape, but I'm going with black this time.
1 x FSA Self Extracting Bolt for BB-8000 (Road) Black
3 x High5 Zero Drink Berry }
2 x High5 Zero Drink Cherry/Orange } these are great - really notice a difference in stamina when I use them, prefer them to gatorade/powerade

Oh and if I just ordered the FSA bolt the shipping was $25

IIRC, young peoples would be saying "werd" about now. Online buying tends to rewire the brain into a more feminine paradigm. "It's not what you spend but how much you save" 8)
