wheel truing tutorial

Postby jeff_o » Tue Dec 07, 2010 4:55 pm

hey all... i can build any bike... only thing i don't have confidence is wheel truing. i'm about to restore my old bike but wheels need truing... either i take it to an LBS, or being 'if you're a cyclist, you have to true your own wheels', i have to learn how to true it. any tips/advices? saw sheldon brown's website on wheel truing but i was wondering if anyone knows some better resources out there. thanks.

Park tools or Biketutor for a start.

You could buy Roger Mussons ebook too, brilliant resource.

Dont buy one of those !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! round spoke spanners for $10, the one I bought was so soft it rounded out and buggered the nipple too, and I was not putting much force into it.
Buy quality tools, they do the job easier and will last a lifetime.
Cheers

Good stuff.... next step... building a wheel! :D
(it was my next logical progression about 6 years ago)

Like anything it takes practice so just keep trying. Its also something, wheel building and wheel truing, where if you rush at it without too much thought you will probably really screw up the first few goes before it starts to work but if you take it really slow you might even build a really good wheel first time.
Then you become kind of addicted
I am currently fiddling with old old 700c rims and tracking down 36h hubs to match so that I can 'spoil myself' at xmas and sit down with a couple of wheels to build in front of the cricket :D

what happened was i was too scaredy cat to true my own bike's wheel to mess it up further.

and then i was helping my mate built a bike and since it's not my own bike i had the guts to true it or mess it up lol... i know it's bad but in the end... i trued it closed to perfection. and i was happy about it :D

the only thing i'm not sure are the spoke tensions.... but i had a tip to ping the spokes and all of them should produce an even sound indicating tensions are close to equal.

hey is it cheaper to build your own wheel than to buy a wheelset?

Generally marginal, but it's more fun, and you can get exactly (pretty much) what you want. Good fun too !!!

I found building my own wheel much easier than truing. I guess because any previously true wheel needing truing typically has some sort of problems or damage.

Great for customising, for instance I'm building up a rear disc wheel in 700c. Can't really buy that

Don't see a dynamo hub in the front there :)
My rear wheel is going to cost me $220 as well, far shot cheaper that the stans notubes.

$220 is not much. What spokes, rim, hub did you use?

There is a couple of pretty fierce reviews of that book, some fierce reviews of Jobst Brandt's book too. Maybe Musson's e-book is better. (IDK)

$220 is not much. What spokes, rim, hub did you use?
Mavic CXP 33 2012 rim ( c r c )
DT Swiss competitions black in 285mm & 284mm lengths (yet to arrive)
XT FH-M756 6 hole rear hub ( c r c )

It would have been cheaper if I had ordered spokes from starbike at 98c each. I wasn't prepared to wait 3 weeks, so I sourced them from harriscyclery for $1.69 each.
