Corrosion

Postby squeakywheel » Tue Feb 15, 2011 2:32 pm

I have noticed some lumpy greyish powdery corrosion forming where my spokes meet the rim on my flat bar. Ive only owned this bike for about 6 months. What could be causing it and is there any way to neutralise the reaction?
Many thanks

I'm no expert but some corrosion inhibitor then grease will be better than nothing lightly applied. Wait a day for the corrosion inhibitor to react before applying grease. Anyone improve on this?

Assuming you bought it from a shop take it back and get them to look at it. Better safe than sorry and any replacement may well be under warranty. Unless you live somewhere where corrosion is a problem I'd be wanting to know.

Sounds like steel spokes on aluminium rims. There are things you can do to help the situation but I'd take the easy way out and take it back to the shop.

Thanks Guys. I'll contact the shop - only problem is I bought it online from a store on the central coast.
I'll see what happens.

You can neutralise it with WD40. Spray some into a bottle lid and then apply a drop of it to each spoke hole, wiping off any excess as you go.

In that case take it into your local for an assessment. If there is something wrong, take some photos and get the LBS to write up their assessment of the problem (you may have to sling them a few bucks) and then get in contact with the place you bought it.

An update and a big plug for Merida.

I emailed both the shop where I bought the bike online and Merida about my little problem. I received no reply from the shop but Merida replied very quickly. Long story short is they asked me to nominate my nearest Merida dealer, and I have taken my bike there to have either new wheels or new rims fitted. Merida couldnt have been more helpful. It was such a pleasant surprise I just had to post!
