Split seat tube on a ScottHi,
Well I have just introduced myself and now I am asking for some help! My son has a 56cm Scott Expert (2004 - ally - road) which I rode over the weekend. While I was riding, I noticed that I was slowly sinking. I got home and found that the seat tube had split in front. The split is about 25mm (1") long and it starts from the top down. I have contacted a couple of dealers and as I was not the original owner, the warranty is voided. The bike shops have said that the tube cannot be repaired and to throw the frame away. I am loathed to do that so I am looking for some help. I had thought of welding however I was told that as the frame is heat treated, the welds will not hold. Has anyone out there got any suggestions???? Wazza
There's a guy in Melbourne who runs a business called Grip Sports (Google it). He can and will weld alloy frames, strengthening them with gussets where needed. He's your best best for saving this frame.
However, it could be cheaper to simply get another frame and swap all your components over. Cheers, Graeme Think outside the double triangle.

EDIT: Sorry, looks like they only do steel!
You might also try the guys at cycleunderground, they do frame repairs and resprays at what seem to be reasonable rates. $30 freight each way too. Although, I can smell a nice steel frame somewhere up ahead
McPete Not sure what will be in order, their website says repair waiting time is out to March 08. TLL Will post photos when I get enough 'posts' under my belt Graeme, I will have to talk to the LBS about options. I am looking at the 'new' frame suggestion On another note, I saw an old steel frame bike at a garage sale made by 'Guthrie Bros', any ideas? Wazza
..not much amazing about it...if it is fixed somewhere else they dont get to sell wazza a new frame!
Hi all,
Finally worked out how to post a link, still working on the photos though. I have attached a link to a photo showing the crack on the seat tube. Split tube As you can see it certainly has happened in an unusual place MG, Thanks for the info, I have tried Scott direct about the warranty issue so I will see how I go. If no joy I will give Joe Cosgrove a call. Cheers Waz Wazza
Cant make it out in that photo very well.Yes it looks like it is split in the front?.Does it have a clamp as part of the frame?.
Looks like it has gone from the top of the seat tube to the top of the Top tube.
Odd indeed in that it has gone through the top reinforced (or so it appears) section of the seat clamp area. Ah bugger it, bung on a few SS hose clamps and do them up tight.
I would just chop it off a bit lower down.Get a clamp and just run a bit more extension on the post...but need a better photo.
It looks like the frame acts as a clamp (bolt at the rear of seat tube). If it has split there, it would definitely be a warranty job were you eligible for it.
Out of interest, how much seat post is inside the frame? That sort of damage looks like what I would expect if the bottom of the seat post was higher than the bottom of the top tube, allowing the post to place extra leverage on the clamp area. See my highly technical drawing below:

yes my thoughts as well.No warranty if you aren't the orig owner thou.Thats why I reckon chop off damaged part leaving enough room for a good width clamp to slid over.Get a descent long seat post.Simple
Nice tech drawing Graeme
Gripsport do some fine work on ally repairs, I had a good yarn with the bloke and saw some of his repairs when Princess me MTB was in for a powder coat. Recommended. Shaun ...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Correct about the clamping method! Give that man a cigar. Hope you are right about the warranty.
I measured the seatpost last night 270mm and I had ~130mm down the tube and 140mm exposed. So I would imagine that the leverage would be further down the tube well below the top tube. Nice drawing by the way ![]()
Thanks Shaun, its good to get a recommendation from this sort of forum. I tried googling a number on Thurs but no luck. Do you have any contact details? Although I will try the Brisvegas guy that MG mentioned first as they are closer to home. Thank you to all for your input, I guess now I'll wait for a reply from SCOTT. Once i receive that I'll let everyone know Waz (Raining at the moment - no ride today) Wazza
what a waste of time that clamping device is!...All maufacturers are pretty specific about warranty...first owner only.Wouldn't be to worried fixing it as I am sure you could pick up another frame of that level for 1 or 2 hundered.Probably cost that to repair it.
MG, it's a great idea. I think 2LL claims the yellow jersey for it though ...
