Home-made bottom bracket tool

Postby Bugsy » Sun Jun 12, 2011 7:06 pm

Hi,
I'm having a horrible time trying to remove the drive side bottom bracket cup in an old set-up.
I'm turning it the right way (it is British thread so clockwise) but it won't budge.
Does anyone have any advice?
Has anyone tried Sheldon's home-made bolt and washer gadget for removing the cups?
Cheers,
Bugsy

yes, I used a 5/8 bolt, 2 big washers, 2 nuts, a stilson and 6' of pipe!

I hold the head of the bolt with a 19mm socket through the bb shell until tight.
Cheers,
George.

Thanks for that. It is reassuring to know.
Is the Stilson a pipe wrench?
Did you use any sort of lubricant to try and soak the threads first?

Done similar on an old Italian.
Yes it is, Stillson is an old trademark. Sorta the iSpanner of its day.
I'd go with Penetrene meself but there's lots of types out there.

wouldn't the drive side be anti clockwise to remove?

Only for Italian and French BBs mate. The rest of the world sensibly uses a gas thread on the RHS cup. There is sound engineering behind it.

woops, i always thought the drive side was right hand thread and the left side was left hand thread.

Or is that only the pedals?

Yep, pedals only. It's down to the relative rotation of the spindles.

If the cups and cones are in good condition should I just repack them or am I better off replacing them with a sealed cartridge?

I can't see any benefit to swapping if the one you have is in good nick. I'm assuming that you can adjust an old skool BB of course.

Yep, I'm old enough to be old skool myself so the adjustment won't be a problem.
Any grease recommendations?

I use Castrol boating grease for hubs, haven't used an old skool BB since hollowtech came out.
This stuff is designed to look after boat trailer hubs in salt water, great stuff.
Check out your local carparts shop, a tub will last forever.
