Front chain ring question

Postby Deanj » Sun Mar 02, 2008 2:53 pm

Just putting a chain reaction order together and have come to chain rings. I've currently got a 105 with 39-53 chainrings. On the current chain ring it says 53-b, so I click on 105 chain rings and they only do a 52-b. I'm happy with the 53 so can I just order a 53 ultegra chain ring to use on the 105 cranks or will I have any problems with this?

On the 105 list it says you must use A with A and B with B but doesn't say this on the Ultegra chain rings, so I'm guessing there will be a problem.

You may need to adjust the chain length.

Why? He isn't increasing the number of teeth, and one link extra on the chain is not a big weight to carry.

Cheers,

52 and 53 swap isn't it? I know the difference would be very small, but there would be a geometry change.

Nah my poor explanation, I'm using a 53 (105 chain ring) now and want to stick with it, but they only do a 52 in 105 chain rings at chain reaction cycles. What I want to know is, if I buy a 53 Ultegra ring is it compatible with 105 arms?

Is it just a matter of BCD (orPCD) in when staying within a brand? In this case Shimano.

My only experience of buying an aftermarket chainring to date admittedly was a very cheap Rocket chainring off e-bay - with the dual 110/130 BCD bolt hole patterns.

I bought it to fit to a Shimano Sora 130 BCD crank and had to file a few mm off each mount lip - as even though the bolt holes lined up the crank spider shelves were too shallow for it to mount flush. Don't think I'd recommend Rocket Rings now anyway :( very cheap & nasty.

Cheers,

I'm not really in the need for it, just though may aswell while I was putting an order in. Decided to leave it and worry about it when it needs replacing.

You can always pose the question to CRC. Use email - they sometimes take a while but have always come up with answers for me.

Needsapush

Its the BCD of the ring that you need to look at to see if it will fit. I bought an Ultegra large chainring thinking it would go on my SRAM cranks (blond moment) and when it wouldn't I did the research...I think most are 110 BCD.

P.S I went straight to Ultegra, price between 105 and Ultegra was almost negligible. DUra-Ace, well thats another story !

Cheers..Pete
