Aluminium freehub body being eaten into

Postby vander » Wed Oct 17, 2012 3:57 pm

I was just pulling apart my bike and was struggling on a task I thought would be easy taking the cassette off it wouldnt slide off (i was trying to keep it all as one) then taking them off one by one I found it had eaten into the freehub kicker is its an aluminum freehub. The worst one had eaten in probably close to half a cm. Is this normal? I now face the problem of I can get the last spacer off at all because where it is eaten into it it has raised it up a bit. I was hoping to put a new cassette on but does this mean I should get a new freehub?
Additionally I dont know what its called but where you put the skewer into on the drive side the end of that just pops off and has no locking mechanism and the whole freehub can slide on the hub (atleast a couple of cm) and the frehub comes off readily with no locking mechanism. Im new to all this so I dont know what is normal or not but on my other wheel the sliding doesnt happen and where the skewer goes in does not just pop off.
