Head tube issues.

Hey Guys,

I've recently had a frame powder coating and went to being rebuilding the head unit. and it appears with the power coating one or two parts no longer fit in the head tube. I was thinking about doing some filing, but i don't want to damage the paint work (after already clumisly putting a small ding it with my own handy work).

Is there another potential way to do this?

I though about maybe putting the parts in the freezer for a while to see if they would squeeze in after that

Find someone with the correct reamers. A frame builder will have them.

Yes this is frustrating !

But surely if they are the same parts you took out, then it is due to some excess paint that can be scraped off from the inside of the headtube

If it is more than that and there is no urgency, as Twizzle has suggested, go to a framebuilder.

But if you are prepared to take a slight risk, get a metal file, preferably one with a slightly curved face.

Yep, if you're worried about filing it yourself then your LBS would be the best place to go. If they're not too busy they'll have the headset in, fitted and set correctly inside half an hour.

this is going back away.. moved house so the bike was packed up..

the other day i pulled it back out, fixed the above issue, however now i realise that in the painting the chrome (?) spacer at the top of the forks that separate them from the head tube has been lost.

any idea of how to replace?
