Chain being on big chainring would have stopped that

It was on the big ring, 'twas the crankarm itself. Poor technique
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

to be fair to Shaun, we were standing in a car park and i was trying to hold the bike steady!
