Any reason I shouldn't try this? Might have to pick up a few bits of steel to shim the bars... Want to get them a bit lower and I'm struggling to see why I shouldn't just flip them?

If you have the Race Lite Aero Clip-On Aerobar, that is the two separate bars.......yes you should be able to clip them on the underside of the handle bar, and fit the arm and hand rests back up the right way.
However it looks like you then would need extra padding on the arm rests to get your arms comfortably above the handle bar.
As far as I can tell the Race X lite Clip-on have the mounting bracket in one piece making it virtually impossible to fit to the underside of the handle bar.

Shouldn't be any safety issues with this approach, then? Noice. I want to flip them as it's worth an inch, and that's going to save a new stem purchase!

Like I said... I'm doing a LOT of kms to work, the bars just give another place to rest. It's really good training for maintaining the drops position as well.
I did tell the lads at the bike shop that I'd get a TT bike if it came with rackmounts
