Hi just purchased a ute.
I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to the best way to set it up to carry to to road bikes safely.

A friend of mine set his ute up with standard roof bars over the tray, fastened to the channels, and roof bike-mounts fitted to these. The tray has a sliding 'rolladoor' style shutter. This means the bikes are readily accessible, but at the same time the tray functions as a useable, lockable load-space that can be accessed without removing the bikes.

I was thinking of a bracket for the forks.There seems to be a few available not sure what actually works.

Yep, a cycling club base-camp. We had about 56 people in tents and cabins over the Melb Cup Weekend.

I know a popular choice back when I was in the US was the bolt down fork mounts like these:

You can attach them right to the bed/tray, but most people I knew just attached them to a nice solid piece of wood so they were a bit more portable. Easy to find a way to secure the wood plank without permanent holes, too. There's a couple expandable mounts that work like that, but they're quite pricey. They get good reviews on Amazon,though.

Thanks JBark , the brackets look just right.

Will take pics of my mates' home made front fork brackets. Just quick release levers inserted through appropriately cut aluminium.
One has it on the back of his trayback, and the other does the block of wood which goes in his VW Caddy Van.

I have a roll top with bike racks on top, I've also seen people use the Flexiglass lids the same way, though the roll top can be be fully opened with the bikes on and the Flexiglass lid not so much

I set up my tray like this. I have two (one permantly fixed to the lid of the tool box and one added to the floor on the drivers side when required) of these Yakima lockable floor mount front axle brackets and a pair of threaded steel rings behind to tie down the rear wheels. This set up takes 2 minutes to load and unload the bike and has not passed a recent 4 hour part dirt road long haul trip last spring.

In the back of my 4WD I use a block of 4x3 timber cut to the hub width and drilled to take an old front axle. Works just as well and is a lot cheaper - ie free.

So is that your road or the MTB?

thats my new road bike santa gave it to me this morning!

The colour scheme is very hot but the bars don't match the saddle.

Plus I think you could reduce your rolling resistance by fitting narrower tyres.

Not sure about the effectiveness of this rear fairing idea. UCI will ban it.
