7900 leavers with 105 and ultegra parts

Hi All

Are Durace 7900 STI Double Shifters compatible with 105 and ultegra derailleurs and 105 brakes. I have a front 105 and rear derailleur and 105 brakes ( I am assuming the brakes will be ok as it is just a cable and a pivot. I have been told the 7900 shifters will help with the reach to the shifters while in the drops. I have tried to locate spacers for my 105 shifters but everything I have tried is not suitable or wont fit. Research shows that the 7900 shifters have reach adjustment which I think will solve my problem.
Any assistance will be appreciated

The 7900 right hand shifter is compatible with Ultegra/105 10-speed rear shifting but the left hand 7900 shifter is not compatible with Ultegra/105 front derailleur. It will probably shift the gears but may have bad chain rub that can't be got rid of.

You could upgrade the FD to DA 7900 - they are not too expensive. Then it would work fine.

The brakes are compatible but not perfect - you will notice some difference with the braking but it is quite safe.

You don't have to spend the big bucks on Dura-ace unless you want to. Ultegra 6700 levers have the same adjustment shims that will reduce the reach to the levers. I have them installed on my bike and they are quite effective. And you won't have the problem with the front derailleur compatibility.

there seem to be different opinions on this (i checked, having nothing better to do with my time obviously). coming from the old school days of 7 spd cassettes, i don't have high expectations of needing to cross-chain. a bit of rubbing in gear combinations you really don't need doesn't bother me. having said that, i've never tried this precise setup.

Many complete bikes with 105 5700 levers come with 5mm or 10mm spacers for the levers as an option. Any bike shop will have some of these spare, and they push in with no tools. The same spacers fit Ultegra 6700 levers.

If you have the older Ultegra 6600 levers, you can also get spacers for them too. I have used the Specialized brand ones but Shimano made them also. Shimano have made reach spacers for probably all road levers in the last few years, I have seen them for Tiagra as well.


I would suspect that any mix of 5700, 6700 and 7900 groups would work.

I have been given a few of those spacers and none of the variations fitted into the shifter body. I will try the specialized ones.
My thinking at the moment is to try for a set of new 6700 shifters as it seems the 7900 dont work well with the front 105 or 6700 derailleur.

Tell us, what parts are on your bike. 5700 or 5600?

I have 5600 levers.

I got these (bottom of page). I cut both knobs off the top and glued them in. From memory one of the knobs is right but too big. They are a perfect fit, covers all the gaps ... I can take some pics if it helps (probably best to PM, I dont see threads often any more).

Before I did that, I pulled the plastic dampening tab off and just double sided tape a bit of rubber in there, that worked fine.

I saw these but couldn't find anywhere to get them.
