My cheap and cheerful fixie was at work the other day. When I went to ride home found the front tyre blownout and a big hole in the tube...


I thought, the tubers gone anyway, so I'll have a crack at patching it (inner tight-a...showing through) while waiting for a replacement tyre I haven't pumped it to full pressure yet. I'm thinking I'll fit it to the back wheel to prevent catastrophic results should it let go again and inflate and leave it for a week before riding.

Has anyone successfully patched a blowout like this before? Did it hold, or go again witha bang or a slow leak?

Fr the record it is a Kenda tyre and a cheap tube that came with very cheap flip flop wheel set and the wheel may have been givena knock from a truck, but there was no other evidence (warping or scratching etc). Was inflated to around 90psi thar morning.

You'll need a bloody big patch to get enough overlap...

It looks like some of the threads on the tyre sidewall have been broken.
Has the tyre been spiked on the sidewall ? If so, junk it. The abrasion on
the bead will make it's seal on the rim pretty insecure, and gives another
reason to junk it.

Kenda tyres are pretty low on the price and quality scale. Out of respect for
your health, don't continue to ride on them.

As for your inner tight-a$s, spending $100 on a pair of good quality
new tyres makes a big saving compared to risking an ambulance
trip to hospital (>$350 in NSW), and other medical
or funeral costs.

how long does it take to head to to the LBS & pick up a new tyre?

Yes, the tyre will be junked, not going to try and salvage that. I knew it was a low end tyre to start with but I did expect a bit more than a couple of hundred kms out of it. I will check the rim bead for abrasions.

New tyres will arrive by courier from discount online cycle store (again the inner tight-a..) I save my LBS visits for essential need it now items and repair work I can't carry out myself (not much)
