Best brake pads for wet weather ridingI just installed some shimano 105 (5600) caplipers on my wet weather bike.
Only problem is the braking in wet is TERRIBLE! I am going to replace the pads, but wonder if anybody has recommendations for good performance wet brake pad replacements. I am also running GP4000S tyres which run ok in wet, not had too many punctures, but looking for something with more grip in the wet, again any recommendations.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingA softer compound will wear down faster but grip better, like Koolstops.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingKoolstop salmon pads. They grip well, but they also wear quite well too.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingI've used Koolstop salmon for a few years but have recently changed to Swisstop black or green. For me the green stop as well as Koolstop in the wet, but they don't leave the annoying residue behind.
When I had GP4000s I thought they were pretty good in the wet. Schwalbe Durano and Ultremo ZX are good in the wet from my experience as well.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingJust get the 5700, 6700, 7900 series brake pads which are much better in the wet. R55C3
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingKoolstop. Tried stacks of other brands, they pick up too much alloy and trash rims. Although I do like the new 5700 in the dry... very good... but I don't ride that bike in the wet. The worst were some Deore V-brake shoes that somehow disappeared in a 25k wet ride, must have been water soluble!

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingYes, the base-line Deore V-brake pads are well known as being made of marshmalow
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingWhere does everyone get the koolstop pads from ? Was thinking of getting a set of dura with holder http://www.koolstop.com/english/road_pad.html
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingI used to get them from PhantomCycles, but their dropped their online store.
Torpedo 7 has them. Cell only has the version for carbon, CyclingExpress doesn't have them. You might find them in some of the other stored, but the T7 price is pretty good.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingGot mine from Wiggle, couldn't find local stock for love nor money.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingThanks everybody for the replies, I just fitted some koolstop salmon and grand prix 4 seasons. All the pros seem to use swisstop, but they are 3x the price! Just waiting for a bit of rain now to test em out!

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
I have always found your ability to pick up alloy bits a bit of a quandary. I have been running swisstop pads for years and have never had that problem nor can I think of anyone else who has had this problem James

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
I have found one local store who stocks swisstop. I can buy 4 sets off wiggle for the same price James

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
Some don't notice, and others don't whinge. It is a common problem for me. I can't talk about John's new bike but we did lose about 2mm of pad on Apollo road due to melting Cheers, Cameron
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
Perhaps if you rode alloy for training instead of killing yours carbon rims... Sent from my iThingy... I ride, therefore I am.

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
The wheel was nearly 7 years old. Not bad if you ask me. My last alloy rim that I retired was 10 James

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
It didn't die from natural causes - you killed it. I ride, therefore I am.

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
The carbon rim died from the breaking surface wearing down and I put the coup to grace by cooking it on a decent. The alloy was wear and tear which wore down the rim Killed with lots of love and use James

Keep dreaming - you killed it with heat. I ride, therefore I am.

Re: Best brake pads for wet weather ridingRegarding the tyres, GP4000s are good in the wet! Especially the GP4000S version.
Re: Best brake pads for wet weather riding
Yes I run the go 4000s on my dry bike great tyres, but in the wet I went for the 4 seasons because of the extra tread and also extra punture resistance, as when it rains it tends to wash up loads of crap towards the edges of the road, I get most of my punctures after it rains. Lol It's still not rained since I fitted them though. ![]()
