11 speed DT Swiss Hub + 10 speed spacer installation?

Postby DavidTomic » Tue Apr 09, 2013 5:27 pm

Hi guys ...

So I've just received a new set wheels with DT Swiss 240 hubs, and the freehub is actually an 11 speed unit with an adapter/spacer to make it compatible with 10 speed cassettes. [Apparently this is now the norm with new DT Swiss hubs ... or so the Internet tells me anyway]

Normally with a Shimano cassette you'd install the "low spacer" first, then the first sproket set, and just continue on from there.

The difficulty I'm having at the moment is that I'm not sure where this extra [DT Swiss] spacer is supposed to fit into the mix?

I'm assuming that you'd still use the regular Shimano spacer, but do I install the DT Swiss spacer first, then the regular Shimano one, or is it the other way around? Does it even make any difference?

There is a pattern cut into the top of the DT Swiss spacer, which makes me think that there is a specific order that it should be installed, but I just can't seem to find any information online to confirm one way or the other ...

Does anybody have any thoughts?

The extra cog for 11-speed means the freehub is 1.85mm longer so I would imagine you would need the standard spacer (for 10-speed) plus the 1.85mm spacer and the order shouldn't matter. This is based on using a Shimano 10-speed cassette on a Shimano 11-speed freehub. For other cassettes see the table in the article below.

Install both spacers before the cassette, the DT Swiss spacer and the spacer that comes with the cassette for running 10sp.

If running 9sp only use DT Swiss spacer.

If running 11sp, don't use any spacers.
