Crackle and pop noise from bike - ideas?

Postby eightsixboy » Fri Apr 12, 2013 8:45 am

Hi all,

I have an interesting one, I went for a quick 15km ride last night, about 3-4 km's into the ride i started to hear what sounded like a crackling noise, it was there whether or not I was pedaling. I continued for another km or so but the noise was still there. I stopped and inspected everything, spun the wheels etc but could not see or hear anything.

The noise sounded as if there was crackling coco pops under the bike or something.

The noise came and went a few times, by the end of the ride it was gone.

A mate said it could be a wheel, or a wheel that could fail soon. Is there any truth to this?

I carefully inspected the bike when I got home, couldn't see any cracks in the frame or anything bad.

The bikes a TCR, only a few weeks old, and I have not adjusted anything on it since picking it up from the shop so it should all be torqued up to spec still.

How much distance have you done on it? Might be an idea to go back to the lbs for it's first service

Spokes could be loose. I've found straight pull spokes get noisy when loose.

I'd guess spokes as well. Given you've hardly ridden it, they will still be bedding in and can often be noisy whilst doing so. If there were loose I'd expect to see rim deviations so check that.

Intriguing - since it went away, something sticky you picked up on a tyre perhaps?

Also check the saddle is not to loose and creaking.

I have had that issue before

Thanks

Thanks for the replies.

I rode it 45km today and it was fine, not one noise the whole time. I'm pretty sure it was something ratting in the drink holder as it was surprisingly dirty under the bottle when I cleaned it last night, looked like some grit or something was under the bottle.

I just replaced a bottom bracket after hearing all sorts of pops and cracks coming from the bike. I was concerned it was frame, suspension bushings or all manner of things. Thing that narrowed it down for me was that it only occurred when pedalling, when I dropped the chain off I could feel the BB wasn't smooth when spinning the pedals.
