DT Swiss Tricon R1700 vs Velocity Deep V wheels

Postby akaBurnsy » Mon Apr 15, 2013 7:32 pm

HI,

I just got great deal on a used 2011 Giant Defy Advanced 1 which came with 2 wheel sets (amoungst other goodies). It came with 32 spoke (I think) Velocity Deep V's installed. The last owner put them on as he didnt want to have issue due to weight (I think the Tricons are rated at 100kg). The Velcity's have Velocity hubs and the DT's have DT hubs. 'Which are the better wheels? I only weight 80kg wet. I'd like to try them both out myself but I dont have the tools so Ill prolly have to pay to swap the cassette. I'll probably flog the spare set off to recoup costs (and i have too many motorbike/car parts in the garage as it is)

Cheers

Dunno which are better wheels... depends on your criteria.

Don't break a spoke... mate of mine did on the Tricons on his Giant Reign an it took weeks to get in replacements for the particular wheelset. Ended up buying a set of Mavics. No more busted spokes or parts supply hassles

Word from the LBS was that DT Swiss aren't so well supported here. Not that i'd rave about Mavic's service so DT must be pretty ordinary

32h velocity would be pretty much indestructible. That's what I'd choose.

Cheers. I probably should stick with the stronger wheels as I can be pretty rough. I use the bike to commute as well as long weekend rides. If both wheels are strong enough to handle my abuse\weight, I'd use the ones with the best hubs.....or just use the Tricons as they look cool (because that's what really matters! )

I've got the 1450 Tricons. They've over 15000km on them and are straight as a dime. The stickers look a bit shabby (ha ha ha) but they still have a good braking surface. Absolutely bullet-proof.

I also have some Velocity Deep-Vs with Phil Wood hubs. I was going to use them as my high-milage wheels, but the DT-Swiss wheels are too good.
Ha ha! Cookies on dowels.
