What's the biggest gear you can run on SRAM Rival?

Postby thecaptn » Mon Apr 29, 2013 10:52 pm

Hi All,

I have a 2012 Specialized Roubaix which comes with an 11-32 cassette and SRAM Rival derailier as standard, can anyone please tell me what is the largest gear I can run on the back?

Thanks Pete

Without going to a MTB RD, I suggest the 32 is the limit. The 32 gives a pretty small gear, what are you trying to achieve? If you need a smaller gear, maybe you could go to smaller chainrings?
What chainrings are you running?

Chain ring is a 34. The set up works well for me but I'd like an unfair advantage for riding Baw Baw. I thought I might be able to go to a 34 on the back.

34 to 32 is already as far as you'd want to go surely? I run 34-29 on my climbing wheels and I never really use the lowest gear, I can spin 100 on the next lowest and still feel like I'm hardly moving and about to fall over.

I've got a 22 chain ring and 36 cassette on my tourer and can cruise up anything with that. I should probably just use this bike for the really steep rides.

Thanks Guys

You've obviously got the medium cage Rival RD already. Best it can do reliably is 32 however you could run a 11-34...just. But you won't gain much and you'll risk bigger gear jumps lower down.
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

My steel cyclocross bike has Rival, but with an X9 RD to handle the 36 tooth cog.

You should take a short ride up to Beecroft station, ride to the bottom of Hannah St, turn right and climb Cardinal Ave up to Pennant Hills Rd. Then, try Hull Rd for comparison.
If you can spin 100rpm up either of those hills I will buy you a beer :-)

So you've got road shifter talking to mtb derailier?

I was hoping to just change cassette and maybe chain for the odd ride but retain the current setup for day to day riding. I get what your saying and it makes sense. I should just loose 10 or 15 kg, that would be an ideal solution.

SRAM 10 speed all use the same 1:1 pull ratio.
