For the hard to get at places I use a small soft toothbrush dipped in clean water. The chain and cassette are hit with a spray on degreaser and them followed up with Rock N Roll Gold.

The heavier grease and grime I use alcohol wipes, followed by baby wipes and finished with Mr Sheen and a soft cotton rag. Been washing them this way for 5 or so years, no water or detergent needed.

Have a crack at some Mr Sheen, I only use the alcohol wipes to save on rags and am a bit fussier than you by the sounds. The mighty Surly will thank you for itNobody wrote:I just wipe my bike down with a bit of metho on a rag.

A bit fussier? Don't you still own a Cervelo? Of course you're fussy.warthog1 wrote:Have a crack at some Mr Sheen, I only use the alcohol wipes to save on rags and am a bit fussier than you by the sounds.
Seriously though, thanks, but most of my riding is by salt water and sweat a lot too which manages to rust even "stainless" steel. Either way, it's rusting though the powdercoat in places so I just either bodgy respray or just keep using Lanoguard depending on how lazy I feel. Mr Sheen probably would be overkill for it. After all, it's over 3 years old now. That's old apparently. Most roadies would be turning over their bling carbon bikes after 3 years.
Besides, what happens if you accidentally get that stuff on discs and pads? Could make your ride "interesting". I can clean the discs with metho without lasting problems.

That's not fussy that's discerningNobody wrote:A bit fussier? Don't you still own a Cervelo? Of course you're fussy.
Don't know about discs but I clean my rims and brakes with it also, dissolves road grime beautifully, and it still brakes fine.Nobody wrote: Besides, what happens if you accidentally get that stuff on discs and pads? Sounds about right for treadlie lids too, it's a very effective solvent for many plastics.Pedaling wrote:I was told not to use metho on my motorcycle helmets, as it affects the integrity of the helmet.

OK, thanks. My limited understanding is you can get oil on rims and they still brake OK (I've tried it) but you can't get anything on discs without problems. I could be wrong.warthog1 wrote:Don't know about discs but I clean my rims and brakes with it also, dissolves road grime beautifully, and it still brakes fine.
I've got an idea. When you get discs, can you try cleaning them with Mr Sheen and let me know?
Powdercoat is a plastic.Mulger bill wrote:Sounds about right for treadlie lids too, it's a very effective solvent for many plastics.Pedaling wrote:I was told not to use metho on my motorcycle helmets, as it affects the integrity of the helmet.
I know Surly's powdercoat isn't that great anyway, so I don't know if I've contributed to the rust or not. Oh well, might have to start polishing my discs with Mr Sheen too.
