Any one using Shimano trail pedals on a road bike?

Postby rtnicho » Tue Aug 06, 2013 8:59 am

Greetings all
After many years of using SPD pedals on mountain and communter bikes and SPD-SL pedals on go fast road bikes (because that's what everyone else does), and increasingly thinking there's not much difference, I've decided to standardise on the SPDs. I was about to press the button on some Shimano XT M780 (or possibly XTR M980s) when I saw the XT M785 / XTR M985s. see here
http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/m ... edals.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
They seem to have all the advantages of SPDs (double sided etc) but with a wider contact area, much like the SPD-SLs, and a weight gain of only 50 grams.
Anyone using them?
Cheers

I use XT trail pedals on both my touring bikes. They are very easy to clip into, and the platform is big enough to avoid hot spotting. And great for restarting on steep hills, as you can pedal on the platform even if you miss-cleat.

Merlins price looks good if the postage isn't too high. I bought a set from Cell earlier this year for around $90, but currently $79.95.

You would probably find once clipped in that the shoe didn't really contact anything but the cleat area. So I'm not sure that the extra pedal area does anything for you, unless you were wearing knobby MTB shoes that might be in contact with it. If you're in road or touring SPD shoes, there is probably a gap.

Yup, I use an SPD pedal on my roadie as I got sick of walking like a duck off the bike and wearing out cleats. These ones are good, and are actually lighter and cheaper than that XT set, although aren't double sided.

My experience is that SPDs give me really bad hot spots, but my brother uses them on his road bike without any issues.

I have used both road and MTB pedals and found little difference so stuck with the MTB SPDs,

During my research last year I found that the XTR pedals have reliability issues so stuck with the XT units, i.e.

http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/m ... edals.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As noted the bigger cages just get in the way and don't have any additional support, they just weigh more and cost more. I have had 9 months (8,00km in all weather) on the m770's and they are fantastic.

I use the XT M785's. I have an old pair of MTB shoes and a newer lighter pair of road/touring shoes.
So easy on and off the bike.

I've got one pair of shoes, so MTB SPDs for me on all bikes as MTB is my preferred discipline. I also want to be able to walk around in my shoes. I used a pair with platforms a while back, but now dont see any reason to keep the additional platform

I bought the ones linked there (A-530) but am not a fan, the platform bit doesn't seem to have enough grip. The cleat side is no problems though. I wish I had just bought a double sided pair as I have't had much reason to use the platform side.

Spud pedals across all my bikes - road, CX, MTB, commuter.

Just being practical, not necessarily efficient. :smile:

I have the Shimano pedals with the big plastic cage (like PD-M424) and my LG MTB shoes definitely sit on the cage when clipped in. Makes a big difference.

I like using my mtb shoes for all my riding. Road, commuting and offroad.

On the road the best SPD pedals I have used are the Shimano A600 -

These have a nice large platform plus give you better clearance when pedaling through corners.

Yep, SPDs across the range here.

roadies all have them, commuter and mtb have duallies, spds on one side flats on the other (in case I need to ride in joggers i=or someething)

They make these adaptors so that you can use roadies shoes on mtb pedals Image
I find the caged mtb pedals are easier to use when I have to take of at lights in a hurry on hills after unclipping

Likewise, SPD on all bikes. I have MTB shoes for the commute, and Shimano RT-31 Road shoes for the road bike.

I prefer the recessed cleats on the shoes, so no duck walk. I use M540 pedals on the commuter, A520 pedals on the road bike and A530 pedals on the cruiser.

I use them for my flat bar and have had no problems! Makes it easier to walk around, and if one day I end up commuting I will use these

When I get a full blown road bike, I will probably get road shoes but that remains to be seen!

I have SPD pedals and wear mountain bike shoes on my flat bar.

As enigmatic said its easier to walk around and if you need to put your foot down the cleats don't rub on the ground.

The OP's question is: Is anyone using M785 or M985 Trail pedals.

Huh ..? What...? Oh yeah .... me too. :lol:

Here's the story ....When I got my first road bike (about 2002?) I went to buy shoes and pedals. LBS had a package-deal on plain Shimano MTB shoes and the basic mtb pedal. The guy just said "Have you used clipless pedals before?' 'Never' 'OK these are best for you - simpler than road shoes and you can walk around in them and use the same stuff on your hybrid if you want, or on a mountain bike if you ever get one'. Good enough for me.

As it happens, I now have the XT 785s on my CX/road bike and some single-sided/platform SPDs on my old road bike, which I have lent out to two of my mates when they have started riding road bikes. These enable them to start with regular trainers rather than clipless shoes. The first guy went straight to SPD-SL road shoes when he bought his own bike - not sure what the 2nd guy will do as he's still riding the old roadie.

I followed RonKs lead and got theShimano XT PD-M785 Trail Pedals with the large platform for my Moulton and enjoyed them very much as my first clip pedals.
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-xt-pd- ... rm-pedals/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I mated them with some Northwave Drifter MTB shoes.
I've just bought some pedals for my new Surly Ogre touring 29er bike and as much as I enjoyed the dual side clip in's
I've gone this time for the XT Trail 780's with clip in on one side and flat on the other.
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-pd-t78 ... ng-pedals/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I have to admit I prefer this set up which offers me the choice of a whip up to the shops in my jandals/thongs or the bike specific shoes for something more serious. :D

Thanks y'all. I've pressed the button on some 785s - only $72 delivered from Wiggle. I also noticed that one of my other SPDs pedals was on the way out so I got some 780s as well ($59). I'll do a comparison of the two on the roady and report back in a couple of weeks.
Cheers
