If I swap the RD, chain and cassette from my 9 speed 105 gear to 10 speed Ultegra, will I need to change the brifters as well, or can they cope with the extra travel required?

You don't need to change the RD but you do need to change the shifters, because the indexing is in the shifters.

The deraileur will work fine.

Mmm, STi shifters are considerably more expensive than a new RD.

Typical.

Thanks Bnej.

Well shifters are much more complicated internally.

You could get 10 speed bar end shifter pretty cheap and keep using your current brake levers if you were really keen to do the conversion.
