My c2000 Apollo LSX 1.3 mountain bike has a semi-functional drivetrain - there is significant trouble with the drivetrain - the crankset wobbles, the chain needs replacing which likely means a new cassette and probably a new crankset.
The bike has a suspension front fork which still moves, but the adjustment dials are unreadable.
With all that said - is there a point to trying to find the neccessary bits to bring this bike back up to a good standard, or should I just consider selling it on gumtree for whatever I can manage to get and buying a new one?

Sounds like bottom bracket rather than crankset.. How worn is the chain & cassette? There's some chance the cassette could be OK. Parts should only be about $70 all up, and if you get it done at a shop you should only be up for about $50 in labour if that's all you want done.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

The chain is quite slack. The problem is that I have no skill in establishing how worn a cassette is. The bike has never had components changed as far as I know.

The easiest way to assess the state of the cassette is to replace the chain and see how it goes. If it sounds noisy or the chain skips under load, then the cassette is finished.nezumi wrote:The chain is quite slack. The problem is that I have no skill in establishing how worn a cassette is. If you have little knowledge, probably worth taking it to a bike shop for inspection and quote. Should give you an indication if nothing else.
It depends what you want to use it for, but if it was me, I'd probably just fix what is necessary and ride it. If the shocks need replacing and you don't ride it off road much, you could consider a rigid fork to replace it with, which would usually be both cheaper and lighter.

What do you use it for? How many gears?
If it is only a rideabout, 7-8 speed MTB stuff is pretty cheap. You could probably replace the cables, BB, crankset, chain and cassette with low end (< deore) stuff for < $100 if you can do the work yourself (or have someone to help or loan you tools if you do not have them yourself). As Duck said, you might not have to replace the crankset which would make it even cheaper.

The question is, do you want a new bike?
If the answer is yes, any excuse is a good excuse
And the more you want that new bike, the more worn the old one is . . .
cheers

Sorry, I thought I had/intended to say: the bike is a 24 speed, 3 x 8. I ?think? it's Alvio/Acera equipped?simonn wrote:What do you use it for? How many gears?

I have looked around, and Chain Reaction seem to have the lowest prices for the parts. The thing I don't know about/understand is what bottom bracket to look for.
I will probably take the bike to Ceres in Melbourne (the bike shed, community run maintenance/training co-op) and get some guidance on fixing it.
Ideally the bike would be able to handl singletrack which is too much for a CX bike - I'd love to go to Mt Buller in summer sometime.

A standard "English" bottom bracket will do, almost certainly square taper which will cost around $15 from chain reaction. Instead of doing that I simply paid $77 for a new crankset which came with a new bottom bracket.nezumi wrote:I have looked around, and Chain Reaction seem to have the lowest prices for the parts. 6 months ago I overhauled my commuter which is a MTB with slicks of similar vintage and spec to your bike. The whole drive train got replaced along with a new saddle and a some new cables. All up it was around $250 but my bike is running well again. I some have sentimental attachment to this bike so I figured it deserved love rather than simply being replaced.
